Candidates will be appointed to the band 5 pay scale, dependent on the criteria listed in the person specification. Candidates who have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Immunology may be eligible for appointment at Band 6. We may also consider applications from individuals who can demonstrate that they are close to completion of the pre-registration portfolio.

This post will be appointed to Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, however candidates should be aware that Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is part of a pathology collaboration project. Four provider organisations in Lancashire and south Cumbria have formed a network and collaborate on pathology services, they include Blackpool Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.
Main duties of the job
We are well equipped to provide an efficient high quality regional diagnostic service. Our equipment comprises of a Navios flow cytometer, DSII ELISA processors, Capillarys 2 Flex, Hydrasys 2 scan, Euroblot One, Bioplex, Helios slide processors, Phadia 2500, Phadia 1000, 2 x Phadia 250's and a BNII .
Staff rotate within the immunology department throughout three sections; autoimmunity, flow cytometry and immunochemistry and allergy. This provides an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in both advanced automated technologies and specialist manual laboratory techniques within a supportive training environment.
This is a part-time post working 26.25 hours per week.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Performing work duties to the standards required as a HCPC biomedical scientist
- Undertaking the correct procedures for the handling of specimens, pre and post analysis
- Maintaining and operating equipment used in the preparation and analysis of specimens
- Performing a range of laboratory tests autonomously and demonstrating an understanding of the scientific basis for tests and the disease processes under investigation
- Demonstrating awareness of factors affecting sample integrity, risks associated with the sample reagents, or method and other tests indicated by the outcome of the analysis
- Using the main laboratory computer system in accordance with service requirements

Essential
- Degree (or equivalent) suitable for HCPC registration
- HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist
- Evidence of regular CPD activities

Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Experience of working in a clinical pathology laboratory as a biomedical scientist
- Understanding of health and safety legislation pertaining to clinical laboratories
- Understand the components of a quality management system
- Can demonstrate continuing competence in good laboratory general practice
Desirable
- Problem solving ability
- Understanding of laboratory quality issues
- Familiar with pathology LIMS
- Good knowledge of immunological processes in health and disease
- Experience of working in a clinical immunology laboratory
