POST: Biomedical Scientist

REPORTS TO: Haematology and Blood Transfusion Advanced Biomedical Scientists Band 7
RESPONSIBLE TO: Haematology and Blood Transfusion Operational Managers
Job Summary / Main Purpose
The Belfast Trust Haematology and Transfusion Department is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic individual to join our UKAS accredited department of laboratory medicine to become a Specialist Biomedical Scientist as part of our 24/7 service. This is an exciting opportunity to broaden your experience - working in modern and well-equipped laboratories.
The Haematology and Transfusion team is a diverse group of highly motivated scientists, working together with medical teams to further healthcare and provide the best service possible for patients. Our Scientists also work with medical teams to continually adjust the service to support ever-changing developments in patient care. Our service is always expanding and looking to make improvements, and we are committed to our staff being the best they can be.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
For each of the following, the postholder will;
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
Carry out appropriate procedures, including those requiring the exercise of independent judgement and initiative with minimal supervision.
Perform duties in co-ordination with the head of section and will involve sample reception, sample analysis, result interpretation and liaise with clinical and scientific staff.
Use interpretive skills to determine clinically significant laboratory results and take action where appropriate.
Efficiently manage patients' clinical material and maintenance of a safe system of storage. Recognise and comply with safety regulations, guidelines and policy.
Assist in research projects, where necessary, and to be involved in the development of new procedures and techniques.
Carry out any other duties not specified above but which might be reasonably expected of a Biomedical Scientist Band 6.
Be required to rotate through Haematology and Blood Bank laboratories in Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast City Hospital, Mater Infirmorum Hospital and the Haematology laboratory in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. Post holder will participate as required in a 24-hour service which will include extended working day, overnight, weekend and public holidays as part of the conditioned 37.5 hours per week.
Teaching and Learning
Provide personal and direct supervision for trainees and other supportive personnel within the Belfast Trust Laboratories.
Demonstrate and maintain satisfactory progress in both the academic and the 'in-service' training programmes.
People Management and Development
Must continue to meet the standards of proficiency as specified by the HCPC to maintain registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
Participate in Continuous Professional Development in line with KSF and work towards gaining further knowledge through certificate level training and short courses. This will be done through Personal Contribution Plan & Annual Staff Development review.

Infection Prevention and Control
The Belfast Trust is committed to reducing Healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) and all staff have a part to play in making this happen. Staff must comply with all policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control and with ongoing reduction strategies. Standard Infection Prevention and Control Precautions must be always used to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
This includes: -
Cleaning hands either with soap and water or a hand sanitiser at the appropriate times (WHO '5 moments');
Using the correct '7 step' hand hygiene technique;
Being 'bare below the elbows when in a clinical environment;
Following Trust policies and the Regional Infection Control Manual (found on intranet);
Wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
Ensuring correct handling and disposal of waste (including sharps) and laundry;
Ensuring all medical devices (equipment) are decontaminated appropriately i.e. cleaned, disinfected and/or sterilised;
Ensuring compliance with High Impact Interventions.

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION
Biomedical Scientist / Band 6 Haematology and Transfusion Laboratories /
Cancer&Secaist Seices
Must be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist.
AND
Have completed IBMS Specialist Diploma (or equivalent) in Haematology/Transfusion.
Have experience working in Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories.
Good interpersonal and team working skills.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Good IT skills including use of Microsoft office products; word, excel and outlook.
Ability to work systematically and under pressure in a busy environment.
Ability to work accurately with attention to detail and follow set protocols.
Awareness of Health and Safety and Data Protection requirements.
Awareness of the role and function of a Pathology Laboratory in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Interview
Experience of requirements of MHRA and
UKAS ISO15189 (As applicable).
