Job overview

NHS East Genomic Laboratory Hub (EGLH) delivers the National Genomic Medicine Service for a population of 10 million in the East of England; this includes diagnostic, prognostic and predictive testing for rare diseases and cancers.   EGLH is recruiting to the role of bioinformatician, to support development and implementation of clinical-grade software for high throughput and high quality clinical genomics. Skills and experience in testing, deployment and DevOps principles are valued. Our team provides best practice clinical bioinformatics through our cloud-infrastructure.

The role is focused on bioinformatics service delivery to support clinical testing, and you will work with a wide range of personnel in the EGLH region to this end.   Candidates without clinical bioinformatics experience are encouraged to apply; training and support will be provided.

Main duties of the job

  • Validation and verification of clinical bioinformatics software
  • Documentation and support of clinical bioinformatics software
  • Continued improvement of clinical bioinformatics tools, processes and workflows for delivery of genomic diagnostic services
  • Planning and management of bioinformatics software deployment; includes working closely with technical, scientific and clinical functions of the genomic laboratory
  • Investigation and resolution of complex bioinformatics issues by examination of input & output data, and associated bioinformatics processes; includes communication to technical, scientific and clinical staff

Essential

  • Able to conduct Research and Development activities
  • Able to organise and manage complex activities
  • Able to maintain intense concentration on important tasks despite frequent interruptions
  • Able to recognise patterns of abnormality and relate them to clinical situations and provide appropriate advice
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to prepare and present complex scientific and clinical information at meetings or as part of a teaching commitment

Knowledge

Essential

  • Good knowledge of UNIX
  • Knowledge of at least one programming/ scripting language
  • To have a good knowledge of general software development procedures
  • Knowledge of data protection requirements

Desirable

  • Knowledge and understanding of next generation sequencing approaches, and statistical methods used in analysing the large complex data sets generated.
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics tools available for the analysis and interpretation of genetic and genomic data

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in developing and using bioinformatics tools and resources
  • Experience of software development in an object oriented language (eg Python)
  • Experience in analysing large high throughput datasets

Desirable

  • Bioinformatics analysis of next generation sequencing data

Qualifications

Essential

  • First degree in an appropriate biological science, computer science or in bioinformatics

Desirable

  • MSc level degree in bioinformatics
