Job overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team in the Clinical Biochemistry Department of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. You should be a HCPC registered clinical scientist and have an MSc or equivalent in Clinical Biochemistry.
You should have completed part 1 of the FRCPath and have completed, or recently sat pending results, Part 2 module 1. Candidates close to achieving FRCPath Part 2 module 1 may be considered.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will become part of our dynamic clinical team of Clinical Scientists and Consultant Clinical Scientists. The role will include participation in both the Duty Biochemist rota, and the Duty Manual rota alongside input into service development, quality management, clinical audit, clinical training and Multi-Disciplinary Team Meeting (MDT) attendance.
The successful candidate would also be expected to participate in our on-call out of hours rota (approx. 1 in 4 basis). They will also be the departments NSHCS STP training officer responsible for any departmental STP trainees.
There are regular journal clubs, pathology wide CPD sessions and weekly clinical case meetings that all Clinical Scientists attend to support training towards obtaining full FRCPath. The trust has brilliant leadership development programmes and a QI academy, participation in both will be supported. We are part of the Southern Counties Pathology (SCP) network, where we benefit from clinical and professional interaction from a range of colleagues with a broad spectrum of expertise.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As a senior member of the clinical biochemistry team, and member of the blood sciences senior leadership team, provide leadership, clinical support and guidance and strategic direction; acting where required as deputy to the consultant clinical scientists.
Full participation in the general Duty Biochemist and the Duty Manual rotas covering all aspects of clinical biochemistry, proteins and immunology. This includes interpretation of highly complex results, reporting and adding interpretative comments with implementation of further investigations and timely communication/discussion of abnormal results.
Participation in our on-call out of hours rota (approx. 1 in 4 basis) answering clinical queries when required outside the core weekday hours and over weekends and bank holidays.
Provision of a wide-ranging interpretative and advisory service to healthcare professionals and clinical service users.
Provide scientific and clinically led support to general, specialist and POCT aspects of the service, developing knowledge of the analytical techniques used in these areas.
Attend and represent the biochemistry clinical service at MDTs, ward-rounds, grand-rounds, governance and other meetings as and when required.
Assist in development, evaluation and acceptance of any proposed changes in laboratory and POCT analytical procedures and practice. Support and lead quality improvement, innovation and R&D projects as required by department need.
Contribute to going strategic development of the service in collaboration with clinicians, managers and users of the service on both a local and network level including; implementation of new laboratory equipment, analytical tests, services and diagnostic pathways.
Play an active role in the design, delivery and ongoing development of the SCP Network Clinical Biochemistry Service, contributing to strategic service planning, pathway development and service improvement initiatives. Attend and contribute to relevant SCP network clinical, operational and service development meetings as required.
Support the full portfolio of quality assurance of the blood sciences laboratory and maintenance of the UKAS ISO15189 accreditation standards.
Contribute to the clinical governance of the department including annual contribution to the clinical audit schedule, QMS review and handling, regular CPD and maintenance of professional standards.
Take responsibility for the management and training of trainee clinical scientists within the department, including being the named NSHSC STP Training Officer for biochemistry STP trainees. Contribute to the organisation, delivery and supervision of teaching and training of the scientific and technical staff in the laboratory and of other health care professionals as required.
