JOB DESCRIPTION
POST: Ultra Sonographer
BAND: Band 6
DIRECTORATE: Imaging, Medical Physics & Outpatients Division
LOCATION: Belfast Health & Social Care Trust, Imaging
REPORTS TO: Lead Radiographer (Ultrasound)
RESPONSIBLE TO: Imaging Site Lead
Job Summary
To perform ultrasound examinations as part of the Imaging service, Belfast Trust. To maintain a strong clinical commitment in other imaging modalities and rotate through other imaging modalities as required.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
To maintain high standards of ultrasound imaging.
To perform a range of ultrasound procedures which may include abdominal and pelvic sonography, musculoskeletal sonography and vascular sonography.
To assist in the organization and co-ordination of resources in the department.
To supervise radiographers and assistants ensuring that the Directorate’s quality standards are maintained at all times.
To assist in the training of staff in ultrasound, help identify training needs and assist in an effective training program appropriate to your post.
To actively participate in the Directorate’s Quality Assurance Program, including responsibility for the operational aspects of quality assurance in Ultrasound.
To assist in the operational management of the imaging service including the organization of rotas and deployment of staff, ensuring efficiency.
To perform general x-ray radiographic duties as required, within the Directorate to preset quality standards.
To be familiar with and obey Ionising Radiations Regulations (N.I.) 2017 and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (N.I.) 2018 when rotating through the general x-ray department. Also observe Departmental local rules and protocols concerning ionising radiation.
To participate in night duty / shift / on-call / weekend working as part of the normal working week as required by the service.
To perform any other duties in the Radiology Directorate deemed appropriate to the grade by the Radiology Site Lead.
PROFESSIONAL
To perform scans to a high standard in accordance with directorate protocols and guidelines for ultrasound.
To perform and maintain high standards of clinical imaging and personalized patient care in accordance with Directorate and Trust standards.
To assist the Ultrasound Lead Radiographer and Lead Radiologist in any duties relating to the provision of an efficient and effective ultrasound service.
To be responsible for the care, cleanliness and use of equipment in the work area in line with Directorate policies. To report and record all equipment faults to the line manager.
To undertake duties on rotation as required by the Imaging Site Lead and Lead Radiographers.
To take responsibility for their own professional development in the role, in accordance with professional CPD requirements, with evidence of an interest of further study.
To undertake the duties of the post in accordance with Trust and Directorate policies, including the Health and Safety at Work Order (2015) and Ionising Radiation regulations (NI) 2017 and the IR(ME)R (NI) 2018
ADMINISTRATION
To assist in the review and development of operational policies and procedures relating to the ultrasound service.
To ensure a safe environment for patient care and in the absence of same, to report to the Line Manager in the Radiology Directorate and the appropriate departments.
To participate in annual Personal Contribution Program.
To maintain good lines of communication.
PERSONNEL
To participate in the Trust’s Personal Development and Contribution program for all radiographic staff within Imaging and identify training requirements to the Lead Radiographer.
To promote good interpersonal relationships in the Directorate and with other Directorates.
EDUCATIONAL
To maintain and regularly update individual CPD / Mandatory training in keeping with the demands of the post
To participate in multi-disciplinary Clinical Audit and Directorate QA program
To maintain and improve performance through personal audit and peer review.
To assist in the teaching and training of all staff involved in ultrasound and other imaging modalities.
