JOB DESCRIPTION

POST: Senior Audiologist

LOCATION: Belfast Health and Social Care Trust

BAND: Band 6

REPORTS TO: Line Manager

RESPONSIBLE TO: Audiology Manager / ENT Assistant Service Manager

Job Summary / Main Purpose

This is a specialist grade role in which the post holder will be clinically responsible for the provision of routine and specialist audiological assessment and habilitation of patients of all ages. The post holder will be expected to work flexibly across the service.

The post holder will have specialist knowledge over a range of procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience. The post holder is expected to update their own professional knowledge.

The Post Holder will work as part of an established multi-disciplinary team

Responsible for delivering safe and effective Audiology and Hearing Aid Service for adults and children within the Belfast Trust area. This may include a Domiciliary Service and Lone Working when required.

The post holder will be expected to undertake training activities as required and develop more specialist knowledge in line with BAA Higher Training Scheme.

The Trust is committed to career progression and staff will be supported to develop at Masters Level, if desired. Development opportunities are available within paediatrics and adults.Opportunity to develop within a specialist area of interest will be possible.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

The post holder will work as an independent clinical audiologist routinely undertaking the following tasks:

Clinical

Undertake comprehensive audiological assessment of infants, children and adults, including complex and non-routine cases such as patients with multiple disabilities and additional needs. This includes assessment of hearing disability, communication needs and patient expectations, using a range of audiological and auditory function tests adapted to the needs of the individual patient.

Analyse and interpret complex assessment findings and test results to formulate differential diagnoses, determine appropriate management pathways, identify the need for medical referral and recommend treatment options. Recognise when input from other professionals and agencies is required, including educational, psychological, social care and communication support services. Communication and documentation will be maintained via the Epic electronic patient record system.

Develop, implement and evaluate individualised management and rehabilitation plans for adult and paediatric patients in a person-centred manner, determining the frequency and nature of follow-up according to clinical need and case complexity.

Select, programme, verify and evaluate hearing aids and assistive listening devices for infants, children and adults, including provision of specialised audiological rehabilitation and related services. Adapt clinical techniques and management approaches to meet the needs of individual patients.

Select and administer an appropriate range of diagnostic tests, structured assessments and treatment interventions, exercising professional judgement in accordance with departmental policies, professional standards and best practice guidelines. Use analysis, interpretation and comparison of clinical findings to determine the most appropriate course of action and achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Provide complex, sensitive and potentially distressing information to patients, families and carers regarding assessment findings, diagnosis, rehabilitation options and long-term management.

Maintain accurate clinical records, documenting assessments, interventions and outcomes in line with departmental procedures, professional standards and information governance requirements.

Prepare comprehensive audiological reports outlining assessment findings, management plans and recommendations for patients, carers and other healthcare professionals.

Participate in multidisciplinary team working and liaise with internal and external agencies to support holistic patient care.

Assist in the monitoring and achievement of departmental key performance indicators and quality measures, including clinical audit and service improvement initiatives as required.

Contribute to the supervision, support and training of junior staff, students and less experienced colleagues where appropriate.

Maintain own professional competence through continuing professional development and participation in mandatory training.

Accounting for items of stock used during patient management, adhering to local policies and procedures.

Accurate completion of patient outcome forms to ensure the Trust is appropriately recording all patient related activity undertaken.
