Job overview

The role of GP Out of hours is to meet primary health care needs to patients presenting outside of usual GP practice hours. Where appropriate patients are then referred to specialist teams within and / or external to the hospital, or provided with advice for on-going self care.

The post holder will work in GP Out of Hours (OOHs) supporting the clinician’s and offer support to reception as required. The post holder will support and care for patients within the clinical setting working under the supervision of the clinical staff. The post holder will assist clinical colleagues with investigations.

The post holder will (clinical and clerical elements):

  • Be familiar with, and work to, the protocols and policies of the GP OOHs service and Trust policies, paying particular attention to the Chaperoning and Infection Control policies.
  • Closely liaise with other disciplines and the provision of a courteous, reliable and quality service to patients, relatives and carers, healthcare professionals, internal departments and outside organisations.
  • Be aware of the Health and Safety aspects of staff and patients and to promote a safe environment to work in.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of how to prepare, care for and clean equipment within the department and restock supplies.
  • Commit to further training as required by both elements of the role and when competent to assist in the training of others.

Main duties of the job

  • Clinical Support Undertake patient observations (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturations, blood glucose, respirations, pain assessment) and report results to the clinician. Recognise and escalate abnormalities or emergencies promptly. Perform clinical procedures as directed by a clinician, including: ECG recordings Simple dressing changes Cannula care (dressing changes, insertion/removal) Pregnancy and urine testing (including preparing samples for microscopy) Assist in providing basic life support during cardiac arrest situations.
