Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dynamic midwife to lead the Diabetes Midwifery Service at University Hospitals Birmingham. As the Lead Midwife for Diabetes, you will provide expert clinical leadership for women with pre-existing and gestational diabetes, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, person-centred care across the maternity pathway. Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, you will lead service development, drive improvements in clinical outcomes and patient experience, and support the implementation of national and local maternity priorities. The post holder will act as an expert clinical resource, providing specialist advice, education and support to women, families and healthcare professionals whilst leading and developing a team of specialist midwives.

Main duties of the job

Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Diabetes Midwifery Service, ensuring safe, effective and high-quality care for women with diabetes throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period

Lead and develop specialist diabetes midwifery services, driving innovation, service improvement and delivery of maternity safety and quality standards.

Work autonomously as an advanced practitioner, undertaking specialist assessment, care planning, clinical decision-making and ongoing management of complex maternity cases.

Provide expert advice and support to women, families and multidisciplinary colleagues on the management of diabetes in pregnancy.

Lead multidisciplinary clinics, meetings, audits and quality improvement initiatives to improve outcomes and patient experience.

Develop, implement and review clinical guidelines, policies and care pathways in line with national evidence and best practice.

Lead, support and develop a team of specialist midwives, promoting excellence in clinical practice, education, supervision and professional development.

Monitor service performance, analyse activity and outcomes data, and contribute to workforce planning, service planning and business development.

Champion patient safety, safeguarding, clinical governance and continuous quality improvement across the specialist service.

Act as a visible clinical leader within maternity services, fostering collaborative working and promoting the Trust's values of Kind, Connected and Bold.

Essential

  • *Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC
  • *Willingness to become a practice supervisor / assessor or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
  • *Extensive post registration experience as a Diabetes Midwife Specialist at Band 7 or above in defined or associated speciality
  • *Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level
  • *Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator
  • *Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development/ competence.
  • *Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to speciality
  • *Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programmes and teaching / assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting.
  • *Experience in service development
  • *Working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment
  • *Experience of patient service user advocacy role
  • *Experience of resource and budgetary management
  • *Experience of leading on the writing / updating of organisational Policy / Procedure / Guidelines associated with the speciality /field
  • *Can demonstrate expert midwifery knowledge with an ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients and give advice and information to patients / relatives/ care staff
  • *Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the speciality and can translate this to local practice reflected in organisational policy / procedure and service delivery
  • *Has understanding / experience of the principles of Safeguarding
  • *Knowledge of corporate and clinical governance

Qualifications

Essential

  • *Registered Midwife on the NMC Register
  • *Professional knowledge acquired through post graduate degree / supplemented by specialist training, experience, short courses to master's level or equivalent
  • *Independent and Supplementary Prescribing Course or willingness to undertake where this is a requirement of the role
