We are a growing and developing service and are therefore looking to recruit a new Team Leader for the Paediatric Physiotherapist Team .

This is a community post, across the large city of Birmingham, with a caseload of children and young people with neurological and developmental conditions. We would like to recruit a Physiotherapist who is experienced in paediatrics and motivated to help grow and develop the physiotherapy service.  The individual should have proven paediatric experience, working independently and as part of a team.

The work will primarily involve  a mixture of staff management responsibilities and clinical, delivering clinic, schools and community-based assessments and intervention.  The treatments will be delivered using a Package of Care approach.

Candidates will  have responsibility for the line management and supervision of designated staff and students.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the day-to-day operational management and co-ordination, of a designated team. The post holder will act as a conduit between staff and the Service Clinical Manager, ensuring robust two-way communication.

The postholder will deputise for the Service Clinical Manager and provide cover for other Team Leaders if required and as agreed.

Management of a team of staff comprising of bands 2 to 7 including clinical and admin staff. This could be up to 22 members of staff depending on current team configuration.

The post holder will work as a highly skilled practitioner accountable for their own clinical work, using highly specialist knowledge to inform clinical judgements and decision making.

The postholder will act as a source of clinical expertise/advice and guidance for families, carers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team, including Health, Education and Social Care and Health staff

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a Children’s community Physiotherapy Department, we are working as part of Inclusion Services within the Children and Families Division of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.  We work across the whole city, in a range of settings, including mainstream, special schools, health centers and community settings, thus requiring successful applicants to demonstrate a high level of flexibility.

Access to reliable transport  is essential.

  • Carrying out specialist assessments in service area. Developing and implementing a range of programmes of care and treatment to meet the needs of the clients, families and their environments in accordance with agreed pathways and packages of care in specialist area
  • Negotiating with multi-disciplinary team colleagues and carers with reference to case management of complex cases including instigating appropriate referrals as appropriate
  • Using specialist knowledge to inform clinical judgments and decision making for highly complex cases including decisions to discharge
  • Undertaking differential diagnosis of cases and contribute to overall decision-making for complex clients with a range of disorders as part of a team approach
  • Identifying and planning appropriate intervention including delivering assessment and therapy in groups and one-to-one sessions, in accordance with the pathways & service agreed packages of care
  • Taking responsibility for the delegation of therapy programmes to assistants acting as a mentor and supervisor in line with the local delegation policy
  • Providing appropriate treatment based on best practice, adapted to client’s needs and priorities including advising other professionals and parent on the appropriate type and level of support needed to develop skills in the home / school environment.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management and administration of the designated team, including monitoring and authorisation of annual leave, ensuring that there is adequate cover during any planned or unplanned absence (including sickness absence) Manage study leave, authorising leave and discussing with the Service Operational Managers and Professional Clinical Leads any matters of finance or staff development needs. Authorise travel and other expenses as required, within approved authority limits.
