We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and skilled Paediatric Physiotherapist to join the Regional Specialist Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Service. The post-holder will play a key role in the assessment, treatment, and ongoing management of children with neurological conditions who may benefit from FES as part of their rehabilitation programme.
The role involves undertaking comprehensive assessments, determining suitability for FES treatment, and developing personalised treatment plans using advanced clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice. Responsibilities also include the provision and management of FES devices, delivering education and training to patients, parents, carers, and healthcare professionals, and undertaking follow-up reviews in line with clinical requirements and Medical Devices Policy.
The post-holder will support patients and their families with the holistic management of complex neurological conditions, promoting independence, mobility, and maximising rehabilitation outcomes. This is an excellent opportunity for a clinician with an interest in paediatric neurological rehabilitation and specialist technologies to contribute to the delivery and development of an innovative regional service.
Main duties of the job
Assess children referred to the Regional Specialist FES Service and develop individualised treatment plans.
Deliver, fit and review Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) equipment, providing training and ongoing support.
Provide specialist paediatric neurological physiotherapy interventions to maximise mobility, independence and rehabilitation outcomes.
Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies to coordinate holistic patient care.
Maintain accurate clinical records, reports and outcome measures in line with professional and Trust standards.
Manage a complex caseload, contribute to service development, clinical audit, research and quality improvement activities.
Support, supervise and develop students, assistants and colleagues, promoting evidence-based practice and continuous learning.

Skills
Essential
- Proven ability to assess and treat patients with neurological conditions, using clinical reasoning skills.
- Ability to demonstrate developed manual and palpatory skills, physiotherapeutic handling and positioning
- Knowledge and understanding of the rehabilitation process
- Basic knowledge of Orthotic interventions
- Understanding of community support agencies and other professions, and ability to work and liaise with them.
- Basic computer skills –Microsoft packages, basic skills in digital photography and use of associated computer software
- Evidence of good organisational skills including prioritisation of workload and time management skills, and ability to work independently.
- Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of up to date clinical trends, practices and models used in the treatment of people with neurological conditions.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of current legislative changes affecting the NHS especially those relevant to physiotherapy
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of Clinical Governance, standard setting, the audit process and evidence based practice (understanding the principles of clinical governance
- Ability to demonstrate individual responsibility in Health and Safety
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients/carers/colleagues and other agencies, which may include sensitive and/or contentious information. This may require explanation, instruction, persuasion, motivation, negotiation, reassurance and require expert verbal and non verbal skills

- Ability to manually handle patients and/or equipment safely to attain positioning necessary to perform safe and effective clinical assessments and treatments

- Some experience of assessing complex disability including clients with brain injury, spinal cord injury and progressive neurological disorders.
- Experience of wheelchair assessment and postural management.
Qualifications
Essential
- HCPC registration
- Grad Dip Phys / Diploma in Physiotherapy / Physiotherapy Degree
- Evidence of relevant CPD
Desirable
- Training in FES desirable but not essential
- Active Member of clinical interest group.
