This is an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and forward-thinking service with opportunities to work across our maternity sites. We welcome applications from midwives, and student midwives due to qualify in the next 3 months, who are passionate about delivering evidence-based care and committed to continuously improving outcomes and experiences for women and families.
Successful candidates will work within multidisciplinary teams to provide safe and effective care across the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal pathway, with a focus on intrapartum services.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will practice as a midwife within the maternity services in University Hospitals Birmingham, working day duty, night duty/ weekends/ bank holidays.
The post holder will work as an autonomous, accountable and experienced practitioner, providing low risk antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care.
To work within a flexible manner that allows you to meet the individualised needs of the women for whom you are the known or lead midwife and to provide support to team members if necessary.
Strong communication skills will be integral to your role within your team, the wider maternity service and key workers, both internal and external to the organisation.
Act as the professional lead for women, promoting the normal birthing process.
To maintain a professional, approachable disposition at all times with all members of staff, patients and their visitors.
Deliver culturally competent midwifery care that is sensitive, kind, and empathetic.

Experience
Essential
- *Demonstrable post-registration experience across a range of midwifery settings (e.g. antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, community or triage)
- *Experience of delivering holistic, woman-centred care using evidence-based practice
- *Knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures, with ability to recognise and escalate concerns appropriately
- *Understanding of current national and local maternity priorities, clinical guidelines and best practice
- *Experience of assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for women with a range of clinical and social needs
- *Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team and contributing to coordinated care delivery
- *Awareness of risk management, incident reporting and patient safety processes
Desirable
- *Experience of attending Home Births
- *Experience of supporting women with complex needs and/or from vulnerable or socially excluded groups
- *Involvement in audit, quality improvement or service development initiatives
Qualifications
Essential
- *Registered Midwife on the NMC register
- *Diploma/BSc Degree in Midwifery Studies
- *Evidence of successful completion of Band 5 Preceptorship Programme and midwifery competency documentation
Desirable
- *Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) qualification
- *Mentor/Practice Assessor or Supervisor preparation (or willingness to undertake)
- *Newborn Life Support (NLS) training
Additional Criteria
Essential
- *Ability to work autonomously and prioritise workload effectively in a dynamic clinical environment
- *Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey sensitive or complex information with empathy and clarity
- *Ability to build effective working relationships with women, families and the wider multidisciplinary team
- *Demonstrates sound clinical judgement and decision-making in both routine and emergency situations
- *Ability to recognise deterioration, assess risk and escalate concerns appropriately
- *Competence in a wide range of clinical midwifery skills relevant to the role (e.g. assessment, medication administration, emergency response)
- *Ability to supervise, support and mentor students, newly qualified staff and maternity support workers
- *Ability to manage conflict, de-escalate challenging situations and advocate for women and families
- *IT literacy and ability to maintain accurate electronic and paper records in line with professional standards
- *Ability to work flexibly across a 24-hour service, including weekends, bank holidays and on-call where required
- *Commitment to maintaining clinical competence and continuous professional development
- Demonstrates behaviours aligned with Trust values (Kind, Connected, Bold)
Desirable
- *Teaching, coaching or mentorship skills
- *Experience of contributing to service improvement or clinical audit
- *Ability to lead elements of care delivery or shift coordination when required
- *Full UK/EU driving licence (for community roles)
