Main duties of the job

  • To plan, facilitate and evaluate therapeutic groups alongside the Occupational  Therapy Assistants.
  • To oversee the Group Therapeutic timetable for the young people at the Coborn unit.
  • Take responsibility for managing a client caseload, prioritising as appropriate.
  • Undertake holistic client-centred occupational therapy assessments using appropriate Occupational Therapy models of practice and assessment tools working as an autonomous practitioner.
  • Plan occupational therapy interventions and rehabilitation programmes using a goal oriented approach.
  • Monitor and evaluate progress and adapt therapy interventions as appropriate.
  • Carry out a range of risk assessments e.g. For the physical moving and handling of clients, to identify the risk factors associated with community integration for mental health clients and/or to identify environmental risks within the home.
  • To communicate assessment information, treatment plans and clinical decisions to young people, families and professionals.
  • Undertake assessment of the clients home independently or with others to assess and advise about equipment and care needs to facilitate safe discharge and/or effective functioning at home
  • Maintain accurate client documentation working to the agreed format and standards for the rotation area, and to complete discharge information in a timely manner. This will involve use of a patient database in some occasions

Job Summary:

Key responsibilities

  • Provide an occupational therapy (OT) assessment and treatment service to clients referred.
  • Practice in a range of clinical areas including hospital wards, Acute ward, PICU {Psychiatric Intensive care unit} and a Day service clients in their own home and other community settings.

Clinical Duties:

  • To plan, facilitate and evaluate therapeutic groups alongside the Occupational

Therapy Technicians.

  • To oversee the Group Therapeutic timetable for the young people at the Coborn unit.
  • Take responsibility for managing a client caseload, prioritising as appropriate.
  • Undertake holistic client-centred occupational therapy assessments using appropriate Occupational Therapy models of practice and assessment tools working as an autonomous practitioner.
  • Monitor and evaluate progress and adapt therapy interventions as appropriate.
  • Participate in regular supervision and take part in the Occupational Therapy appraisal scheme and preceptorship scheme for first year of practice.
  • Contribute to the supervision of Occupational Therapy students on placement.
  • Participate in team meetings, ward rounds, and training.
  • Use critical appraisal skills and participate in journal clubs and clinical interest groups.
  • Contribute to Quality Improvement projects.
  • Monitor the levels of stock and equipment required for departmental needs and report to senior Occupational Therapists/administrators.
  • Plan occupational therapy interventions and rehabilitation programmes using a goal oriented approach.
  • Carry out a range of risk assessments e.g. For the physical moving and handling of clients, to identify the risk factors associated with community integration for mental health clients and/or to identify environmental risks within the home.
  • Establish effective communication with clients and formal /informal carers, passing on accurate and appropriately worded information regarding interventions and possible outcomes. This may include sensitively conveying distressing news which impacts on their life e.g. Not being able to return to their own home.
  • Liaise with members of the multidisciplinary team and others to ensure effective implementation of the client’s ongoing treatment and management.
  • To communicate assessment information, treatment plans and clinical decisions to young people, families and professionals.
  • Support, advise and provide education and training for clients, formal/informal carers and staff.
  • Undertake assessment of the clients home independently or with others to assess and advise about equipment and care needs to facilitate safe discharge and/or effective functioning at home.
  • To effectively work alongside the Nursing team, education and multi-disciplinary teams to implement the individual timetables.
  • Maintain accurate client documentation working to the agreed format and standards for the rotation area, and to complete discharge information in a timely manner. This will involve use of a patient database in some rotations. Other Duties:
  • Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) and keep a personal CPD portfolio.
  • Adhere to Trust, service and College of Occupational Therapy professional standards policies and procedures.
  • Collect and collate statistical information relating to client activity.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and in line with the requirements of the post as directed by the Lead Occupational Therapist.

  • Ability to plan, prioritise and coordinate a range of complex activities in relation to clinical work.
  • Demonstrate good communication skills, listening, working collaboratively, managing emotions with Occupational Therapy staff, the multi-disciplinary team, young people and families
  • • Ability to learn to recognise and de-escalate emotive situations whilst maintaining personal safety and the safety of the client

Education, training & qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
  • State registration

Desirable

  • Member of British Association of Occupational Therapy
