Band 3 Ophthalmic Technician

Job overview

An Ophthalmic Technician is required to support the Ophthalmology Service across BHRUT sites, including Queen’s Hospital (main site) and King George Hospital. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team comprising consultant ophthalmologists, orthoptists, optometrists, nurses, healthcare assistants and ophthalmic technicians.

The role is essential in providing diagnostic investigations that support the assessment and management of patients within glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology and general ophthalmology services.

Key duties include performing visual acuity assessments, computerised visual field testing (Humphrey Field Analyser), optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging and other ophthalmic investigations required for clinical decision-making.

Applicants should have proven experience in an ophthalmic technician role and hold an NVQ Level 3 qualification or equivalent. Candidates with relevant scientific, healthcare or nursing experience will also be considered, with training provided where appropriate.

You must demonstrate excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy clinical environment. You should be adaptable, reliable, motivated and committed to maintaining professional development.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will contribute to the provision of a technical service across the ophthalmology sub-specialties within a modern NHS eye service including assessment of visual acuity (Thompson 2000), automated visual field assessment (automated and manual) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
