Job summary
Responsible for collecting blood samples from inpatients across hospital wards in a safe, efficient, and compassionate manner to support diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing patient care. Duties include accurately identifying patients, performing venepuncture procedures, labelling and handling specimens according to NHS protocols, maintaining infection prevention and control standards, and ensuring timely delivery of samples to laboratories. Working closely with nursing staff, clinicians, and multidisciplinary teams, while maintaining patient dignity, confidentiality, and high standards of care in line with NHS policies and values.
Main duties of the job
Carry out venepuncture procedures for inpatients across hospital wards safely and efficiently.
Correctly identify patients using NHS identification procedures before blood collection.
Collect blood samples according to requested tests and clinical requirements.
Label, record, and process specimens accurately to avoid errors.
Transport or arrange timely delivery of samples to the laboratory.
Follow infection prevention and control procedures, including hand hygiene and use of PPE.
Maintain patient comfort, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, nurses, doctors, and multidisciplinary teams.
Manage difficult blood collections and adapt techniques for elderly, vulnerable, or anxious patients.
Ensure equipment and phlebotomy supplies are adequately stocked and safely maintained.
Record unsuccessful attempts and report any concerns or incidents appropriately.
Follow NHS policies, health and safety regulations, and clinical governance standards.
Maintain accurate documentation and electronic patient records where required.
Provide reassurance and support to patients who may be nervous about procedures.
