Join Us as a Paediatric Clinical Support Worker
Join our dedicated Paediatric team at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), delivering high-quality care across our children's services at Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital Outpatients Department.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference to children, young people and their families during some of the most vulnerable times in their lives.
We seek caring, enthusiastic and motivated individuals with recent experience of working with children and young people. You must have effective communication skills to converse with children, families and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
You will provide compassionate, safe and effective care in line with our Trust Values, supporting the physical, emotional and developmental needs of children and young people. You will understand the importance of safeguarding, health and wellbeing, neurodiversity and mental health, helping to create a positive experience for every child and family.
Individuals must be eager to learn, professional, reliable and trustworthy, act as positive role model and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to deliver excellent patient-centred care.
Ward-based roles operate on a 24-hour, 7-day rota. Outpatient roles are Monday to Friday, 8.30am--5.30pm. Following completion of the Care Certificate and specialist competencies, there is an opportunity to progress to a Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker role.
Main duties of the job
As a Clinical Support Worker (CSW), you will play a vital role in delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care to children and young people with a range of healthcare needs. You'll support families during times of emotional stress with kindness and empathy.
You should understand how poor health affects child development and family wellbeing and work collaboratively with the team to meet each family's individual needs. Sensitivity to the needs of our diverse community, including families with additional support needs, is essential.
Strong communication skills--verbal, written, and digital--are required to interact effectively with children, families, and colleagues. You will help deliver care while maintaining privacy and dignity, accurately record observations on electronic systems, and escalate clinical concerns promptly.
Training will be provided to help you recognise and report safeguarding concerns, support early identification of deterioration, and grow in your role. Good time management and organisational skills are important to ensure timely, high-quality care.

Essential
- * Experience of working with children/ young people in a person centred/ facing role in a paid or voluntary capacity.
- * Experience of working / participating as part of a team as an employee /volunteer.
- * Ability to demonstrate/ articulate an understanding of the role and tasks involved and can describe the physical and emotional aspects of the role and some duties
- * Can link the Trust values (Kind, Bold, Connected) to the role and provide examples from personal experience which demonstrate understanding in relation to the role
- * Can explain why training / education and approaches to care need to be consistent in relation to safety and patient experience
Desirable
- * Understanding of the principles of safeguarding in relation to this role
Qualifications
Essential
- * Successful completion of Trust based numeracy & literacy test or provide evidence to confirm achievement of Maths / English qualifications at Level 2 or above
- * Vocational qualification at level 2 or equivalent relevant experience.
- * Level 2 examples: GCSE Grades 9-4 (A-C) Level 2 Diploma in health care support /NVQ, Functional Skills Level 2
- * Internationally educated applicants will have to evidence UK ENIC (the UK National Information Centre) Statements of compatibility
Desirable
- * Care Certificate or can demonstrate prior skills, knowledge and experience that meet the 15 minimum standards described by Health Education England (HEE) Skills for Health
