An exciting opportunity has arisen at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) for a dynamic and motivated Band 8a Advanced Practitioner Sonographer. QEHB is a renowned, world-class tertiary referral centre leading the way in complex medical specialties.
In this pivotal role, you will lead and coordinate our very busy Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) Surveillance Clinic alongside the Liver and Renal Transplant Surveillance pathways.
Additionally, you will expand your operational leadership portfolio by acting as the formal Deputy to the Ultrasound Modality Lead, helping to shape, manage, and innovate our modern ultrasound services.

Main duties of the job
1. Clinical Leadership & Specialist Surveillance Pathways
HCC Surveillance Coordination: Oversee, develop, and execute the service pathway for patients within the Hepatocellular Carcinoma surveillance program, ensuring accurate, timely imaging and rapid reporting in line with multidisciplinary team (MDT) requirements. Liaise with the liver clinic to develop an efficient booking system for service improvement and optimum patient satisfaction.
Transplant Surveillance Specialist: Act as a clinical expert in complex liver and renal transplant surveillance ultrasound, evaluating graft health, vascular patency, and post-transplant complications.
Advanced Autonomous Practice: Provide expert, highly specialized independent scanning and interpretive reporting on an autonomous basis, providing definitive differential diagnoses on highly complex caseloads.
2. Operational Management & Deputising
Deputy Modality Lead: Deputise for the Ultrasound Modality Lead, taking operational accountability for the day-to-day running of the department, staff scheduling, skill-mix reviews, and ensuring strict adherence to waiting list management targets.

Essential
- Highly specialised ultrasound experience at an advanced level such as interventional procedures or skills at a level above what is expected of a band 7 sonographer.
- Experience of managing a staff group at a senior level. Evidence of role extension. Evidence of lead on audit or research.
Qualifications
Essential
- General science based education to O and A level with a minimum of 1 science based A level or equivalent.
- D.C.R. (R) or BSc Radiography. S.R.R. DMU or Post Graduate Diploma in Ultrasound Relevant highly developed specialist knowledge acquired through post graduate study, Master's degree and/or relevant experience
- HCPC Registration

- Able to adapt to the changing requirements of the post Exhibits leadership, personal authority within specialty
- Active contribution to maintain a well-motivated team
- Exhibits the ability to maintain professional and courteous conduct in difficult/contentious situations
- An understanding of the principles of the development and modernisation of the NHS, particularly in relation to imaging and the education of the healthcare workforce.
