Assistant General Manager - Facilities, Waste and Sustainability

Full Time, Permanent, Band 8-B

The post holder will be a senior manager and subject matter expert with overarching responsibility for the development and implementation of sustainability strategies that achieve measurable carbon emission reductions both at Croydon University Hospital and throughout the local health economy. Acting as a leader, specialist advisor, educator, and trainer, the post holder will guide the organisation, its executive and trust boards, and various working groups—including Carbon Champions—by promoting carbon reduction initiatives and fostering collaboration. This role requires the ability to influence strategic partnerships and joint ventures, contribute to corporate objectives, and deliver comprehensive, efficient services for patients, visitors, and staff, all while championing innovative solutions aligned with the Trust’s objectives. The post holder will be accountable for meeting national carbon emission reduction targets for NHS organisations and will drive the sustainable service developments necessary to fulfil these commitments. Additionally, the post holder will deputise for the Director of Estates & Facilities or Chief Financial Officer on matters relating to sustainability and carbon emissions reduction as required.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be professionally accountable for the Trust’s Support Services (listed below) and will lead the operational direction of Facility Services. This post will involve ad hoc working at weekends on a rota basis if required and on call.

The role will be responsible for the following: A budget of approximately £10m per annum

The post holder will lead a programme of Patient Environment inspections and take appropriate actions to ensure maximum scores are attained in the National Patient Safety Agency, Patient Lead Assessment of the Care Environment (PLACE) process and National Standards of Cleanliness.
