Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a female Bilingual Co-worker to join the team. This permanent, part time position, would provide the opportunity to work with Speech and Language Therapists in varied settings including clinic and school.  The post holder will work with children and young people across the age ranges 0-19 and their families. The successful applicant will utilise their interpreting and translation skills with their knowledge of their culture and language to develop and improve speech and language therapy services for Arabic speaking families in Ealing.

We welcome applicants with strong reading, writing and speaking skills in English and Arabic who have experience of working with children, young people and/or families. We can offer flexible working and support to further develop your skills.

Main duties of the job

You will work in close partnership with parents/carers and speech and language therapists to:-

  • Support with Arabic language assessment
  • Deliver language therapy in Arabic
  • Provide workshops for parents/carers in Arabic
  • Make phone calls to parents/carers in Arabic
  • Translate information and advice into Arabic
  • Support the team to develop their cultural awareness further
  • Create content for social media in Arabic
  • Build relationships with local Arabic community groups

As part of Ealing Services for Children with Additional Needs (ESCAN) the post will also involve regular collaborative working with other professionals such as teachers, health visitors and local charities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

-To provide a high level of interpreting (3-way communication) skills between the Speech and Language Therapist and the child and young person (CYP) /family whose home language is not English. This includes assessment/therapy sessions with a variety of Health and Education professionals.

  • To work according to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist’s and Ealing Speech and Language Therapy Department’s best practice guidelines when supporting CYP/families whose home language is not English
  • To engage in supervision and support from a qualified speech and language therapist
  • To assist in assessing CYP’s strengths and needs in their home language under the supervision of a Speech and Language Therapist and to give verbal and written feedback to the therapist.
  • To translate written advice and information materials in the CYP’s home language using appropriate technology.
  • To advise the Speech and Language Therapy team regarding cultural and linguistic issues which may impact on families/communities accessing and receiving an equitable service from Ealing Speech and Language Therapy.
  • To work with the Speech and Language Therapy team to promote and raise awareness of the service amongst community groups.
  • To support and participate in the induction and training of new co-workers.

Person specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • • Experience of interpreting and translating
  • • • Understanding of the culture(s) of the community groups where Arabic is spoken
  • • Computer literate with experience of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • • Experience of carrying out administrative tasks effectively and efficiently
  • • Experience of communicating and working with children and families
  • • Experience working in a team
  • • Sensitive understanding of diversity issues and an ability to promote anti-discriminatory practice/ equal opportunities

Desirable

  • • Experience of using health data systems, e.g. Systm1
  • • Awareness of speech and language difficulties in children e.g. Developmental Language Disorder, Autism etc.
  • • Knowledge of clinical governance, and child protection issues.
  • • Knowledge of how to build community links and networks

Education/ Qualifications

Essential

  • • Evidence of high quality written and spoken English.
  • • Evidence of high quality written and spoken Arabic

Desirable

  • • Qualification in language interpreting/translation
  • • Accredited peer support worker training

  • • • Must be fluent (reading, writing and speaking) in Arabic
  • • • Able to interpret/translate to English accurately and vice versa
  • • Excellent interpersonal communication skills including presenting information to different audiences (children, parents/carers, school staff)
  • • Strong organisational ability, sufficient to maintain accurate daily records and meet deadlines.

  • • Able to ask for help and support when needed and recognise own limitations and training needs.
  • • Able to act calmly and to respond in a professional manner to distress, disturbance and unpredictability

  • • Able to demonstrate an understanding of the needs of a family who have a child with a learning disability/communication difficulty.
