Job overview

Applications are invited from suitable candidates for a full-time post 37.5 per week (Monday to Friday). Duties will primarily be based in the Mortuary department at Morriston Hospital but will require flexibility to travel to other mortuary sites at Singleton and Neath Port Talbot for training or cover. No professional qualifications are required but a good level of education GCSE in English, Mathematics and a Science subject, NVQ3 or equivalent and previous experience of working with patients/relatives in a health care setting is required. The successful candidate must demonstrate commitment to providing a quality service within mortuary work areas and be able to manage their own workload independently, as a lone worker.

Main duties of the job

To work under supervision within the department undertaking tasks delegated by the Mortuary Manager in accordance with the approved methods and quality assurance protocols.

To record the admission of bodies (adult and children) to the mortuary including checks of identity and physical condition of the deceased plus recording of valuables and property.

Book-in products of conception, foetal, stillbirth and neonatal deaths onto the Pathology LIMS system.

Release of bodies from the mortuary into care of undertakers following a strict protocol.

Assist APT staff with care of the deceased which may include manual handling and cleaning of the deceased according to Standard Operating Procedures.

Regular monitoring and recording of the condition of the deceased.

To book and arrange viewings liaising with the Bereavement Office.

Assist APT staff in preparation of the deceased for viewing.

Assist in monitoring, cleaning and maintenance of the mortuary and equipment.

They will communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals including bereaved relatives, Medical Examiners Service, Hospital wards, the Coroners Service, Care after Death Team, Funeral Directors, Histology laboratory staff and pathologists.

Ensure security and confidentiality of the mortuary by adhering to SOPs.

Provide support to the out of hours on call service.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
