We are delighted to advertise a twelve-month clinical Fellowship in Advanced Airway Management and Anaesthesia for Major Surgery. This post is an exciting opportunity for a post-CCT anaesthetist or a senior anaesthetic registrar to join our team and develop their advanced airway skills. We pride ourselves in training excellence and received excellent feedback from our previous Fellows.

We are seeking an exceptional individual to join the Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics for this one-year Airway Fellowship and anaesthesia for major surgery. This unique fellowship is highly structured, combining didactic, clinical, simulation and research components. However, the Fellow will be allowed the flexibility to mould the programme to their specific requirements. The Fellow will be provided with an outstanding opportunity to manage complex cases, and to acquire state-of-the-art advanced airway management skill sets in real life situations.

Main duties of the job

• Training in advanced airway management, progressing from direct supervision to mentored support. We train our Fellows to the level of independent consultant practice.
• Directly supervised operating lists in Oral-Maxillofacial (OMFS) and ENT surgery with others at request. A broad range of procedures are performed including maxillectomy, mandibulectomy, hemiglossectomy, total glossectomy, laryngectomy, basal skulls tumours resection, coupled with free, regional or local flap reconstruction and tracheostomies.
• Oxford University Hospitals are a leading centre for radiologically guided ablation of tumours and sessions are available to learn the anaesthetic technique (high-frequency jet ventilation). The Fellow will have ample opportunities to perform these techniques.
• Experience in visceral transplantation surgery including renal, simultaneous kidney- pancreas (for which we are one of the largest centres in the world), and modified multi-visceral transplantation.
• The Fellow is expected to become involved in teaching and training, research and audit, and in the general management of patients undergoing UGI surgery and related procedures, including pre-operative workup, intensive care and high dependency provision and post-operative analgesia.
• Experience in intensive-overnight recovery in our dedicated Overnight Recovery Unit.

NON-CLINICAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR FELLOWS

Research Our airway and neuro groups promote research, audit and training in the area of difficult airway management. We have been involved in research which has made a significant contribution to the understanding of issues surrounding fibreoptic intubations. We have worked with the national Difficult Airway Society (UK) to develop national practice guidelines and in multi-centre clinical trials.

The Oxford Group was key to the Royal College of Anaesthetists' NAP4 national audit on complications of difficult airway management as Professor Mansukh Popat was panellist and peer reviewer and Professor Jaideep Pandit co-wrote the key editorial that accommodated the report.

The Airway Fellow will be expected to conduct clinical airway research as well as simulation based research, if desired. The Fellow will be encouraged to be up to date with current research in airway management. They will be encouraged to develop and run their own projects.

Successful candidates will have dedicated nonclinical time per week. The Fellow will have opportunities to present their research at local, national and international meetings. The Fellow will be expected to gain experience in formulating and conducting research projects, writing ethics proposals, and writing/completing a manuscript for publication.

We participate in, lead, and host multi-centre trials.
