We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, motivated Band 7 Children’s Occupational Therapist who is keen to develop their specialist clinical skills and leadership abilities.

The role is permanent part-time (0.8 WTE); based at The Oak Tree Centre in Huntingdon.

You will be part of an effective, innovative and successful service, recognised for outstanding care.

You will be holding a caseload as well as supervising and line managing other members of the team. You will also contribute to the ongoing development of the service.

The role will require you to work across the county of Cambridgeshire, and to work alongside a large number of housing, social care and health colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The role will require the ability to balance clinical priorities while providing support for the Team Lead and Associate Team Lead for the  smooth running of the team. This includes supervision of staff, attendance and active contribution to band 7 meetings, as well as other designated roles that may need to be delegated to you by the Team Leader.

To provide an integrated Occupational Therapy service to children and young people and their families, with a focus on major housing adaptation. This will require highly specialist knowledge in the assessment of housing needs and provision including adaptations and equipment needs for children and young people and their families. It will require close, effective working relationships with the community occupational therapists and with colleagues in social care and housing.

You will be responsible for your own caseload and provide expert clinical support for colleagues within the team.

In addition you will actively play a part in the development of the service. You will have a mixed caseload at advanced practitioner level.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Nature of work

• To provide specialist clinical knowledge and support to colleagues within the housing team
• To provide supervision for occupational therapy staff within the team.
• To assess and prescribe specialist equipment for home (e.g. positioning, beds, toilet and bathing, mealtimes, hoists and slings, safety, access) and link with community OT within the service to ensure a fully integrated service. This will involve work across the County of Cambridgeshire and the ability to travel.
• To provide highly specialised Children’s occupational therapy assessment related to minor and major building adaptations at home, liaising within the integrated team, housing agencies, architects and surveyors.
• To ensure practice complies with legislation, with a particular focus on working within the disabled facilities grant process.
• To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
• To act as a whole service specialist advisor and resource in an area of personal interest and departmental need.
• To appropriately delegate work/tasks to therapy assistants, maintaining oversight of their input with children and young people.
• To deliver training/lecturing programmes to external agencies and internal teams, as required.

Planning

• To plan their own diary and prioritise their caseload.
• To assist with triage, managing the wait lists and maintaining an overview of the county wide team caseloads
• To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of the children and young people’s Occupational Therapy service.

Specific projects

• To hold responsibility for defined, delegated projects.
• To liaise with the Housing Team Leader to ensure that all children referred into housing team receive an equitable service.

Communication

• To provide excellent communication with Children and Young People, Parents, carers, schools, local education authority, social services, acute hospitals, paediatricians, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, pre-school teachers, psychologists (clinical and educational) and child and family nurses.
• To communicate effectively with all these agencies appropriately, often information handled will be sensitive and highly complex.
• Occasionally children are seen with extremely sensitive rare and complex medical conditions this requires communication at a high level with specialist doctors and national centres of excellence.
• To investigate and manage concerns, incidents and complaints recognising limitations and referring to the Housing Team Leader/Clinical Lead, where appropriate.
• Contribute to EEC’ internal communication strategies ensuring effective two-way communication and engagement within the organisation
• Contribute to EEC’ external communication strategies working with the Head of Communications to raise awareness and promote the reputation of EEC’ services

People Management

• To line manage and supervise junior Occupational Therapists (alongside the team leader and associate team leader Occupational Therapists) this includes clinical supervision, professional leadership, annual appraisal and completion of personal development plans.
• To support junior staff with caseload management
• To support the Clinical Lead in the recruitment of Occupational Therapists.

Research & Development Activity

• To maintain own professional development and requirement to take part in appraisal and KSF process
• To undertake evidence based audit and research projects to further own and team’s clinical practice.  Make recommendations to the clinical lead of the service for changes to practise by the team. May lead the implementation of specific changes to practise or contribute to service protocols.
• To undertake the measurement and evaluation of her work and current practices through the use of evidence based practice projects, audit and outcome measures, either individually or with lead practitioner. To work with the clinical lead to change the service protocol in line with results.

Clinical and Practice Governance

• Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.
• Any data that is taken/shared as part of a phone call or transported or transferred electronically must be undertaken with regard to the Trust Information Governance and Information Security policies.
• The post holder must adhere to the Trust risk assessment and risk management processes
• The post holder must adhere to infection control policies and procedures
• It is a condition of your employment that you are currently registered with HCPC, and it is your responsibility to maintain your professional registration.
• Undertake mandatory training and any other training relevant to the role as required by East of England Community Health and Care NHS Trust.
• The post holder must participate in clinical and safeguarding audits as required.
• Provide patients and their families/carers with information on standards they should expect from the team
• Participate in clinical supervision on a regular basis
• The post holder is required to participate in relevant emergency preparedness process for their team.
