Job overview

Working Full time: 37.5 hours per week

As an advanced podiatrist you will play a proactive role in developing care pathways and new ways of working whilst utilising a full range of routine and advanced podiatric techniques.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and will provide advanced podiatry treatment to patients with diabetes and complex vascular wounds within both inpatients and outpatient clinics in an acute secondary care setting. The post holder will be a source of clinical expertise for high-risk foot care.

You will provide comprehensive advanced assessment, diagnosis, planning, treatment and implementation of podiatric care, including wound management and pressure offloading to maintain patients’ mobility and independence.

The post holder will be able to work flexibly to include some weekend working to enable a seven day service and there will be occasional travel to Ellesmere Port hospital as required.

Clinical audit, service review, supervision and clinical education is an essential aspect of this role.

Main duties of the job

1.     Manage a complex and advanced clinical caseload of high-risk patients using evidence based practice to assess, implement and evaluate podiatric treatment plans.

2.     To provide and maintain a high level of care reflecting the skills of an HCPC registered Podiatrist.

3.     To deliver advanced podiatry skills including pressure offloading, casting, vascular assessment and wound debridement to patients with diabetic and complex vascular wounds and pre/post surgical intervention.

4.     To have a good knowledge of wound dressing products and use evidence based practice in your decision making process.

5.     To be involved with decision making for the prescription of antibiotics and other prescription only medication.

6.     Request and interpret x-ray reports, doppler scans and blood tests, recommending further investigations as clinical indicated.

7.     Empathetically explains complex and potentially distressing situations eg the need for amputation, to patients with complex foot wounds.

8.     To work autonomously as well as part of a team to manage your own clinical caseload and undertake clinical duties that will involve treatment in an acute secondary care setting in outpatient clinics/ MDFT foot clinics and inpatient wards.

9.     Triage referrals to the service on an agreed criteria to ensure patients are not put at risk.

10.  Liaises with other healthcare professions according and effectively to meet the individual need of the patient.
