Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an Advanced Pharmacist in Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust to join the Clinical Pharmacy team at Queens Medical Centre. You will be responsible for delivering a high-quality pharmacy service within your allocated clinical specialty, managing key service requirements and supporting the wider directorate in the delivery of effective medicines-related care. You will be responsible for contributing to service leadership, supervising and developing junior pharmacy staff, and working collaboratively across clinical areas. The role also involves participating in the planned clinical rotation programme, 7-day shifted rota and bank holiday duties, with rotations across Queens Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital according to service requirements.

Main duties of the job

As an Advanced Pharmacist you will be responsible for applying specialist pharmaceutical knowledge to ensure medicines are prescribed and used safely, rationally and effectively. You will be managing medication-related requirements through medicines reconciliation, prescription review, assessment of treatment suitability, and facilitating the appropriate use of patients own medicines and self-administration. You will be supporting patients by providing medicines counselling and ensuring appropriate medication is supplied for inpatient treatment, discharge and outpatient care. You will also be responsible for interpreting and requesting relevant clinical tests to monitor drug therapy and making evidence-based recommendations to optimise treatment. Working closely with medical, nursing and other healthcare professionals, you will provide specialist advice on medicines, promote adherence to the hospital formulary and national guidelines, and contribute to improved therapeutic outcomes.

Job responsibilities

  • To provide advice on the appropriate use of unlicensed medicines and clinical trial medicines under the direction of the senior pharmacist for clinical trials, ensuring relevant requirements are understood and followed.
  • To support Pharmacy Production Services across both campuses when required, undertaking activities such as checking, supervision, workload planning, document management and maintaining quality management processes within production facilities.
  • To contribute to the monitoring of medicines expenditure and prescribing patterns, supporting effective use of resources, balanced drug budgets and financial planning for the introduction of new medicines and developments.
  • To assist with workforce and operational processes by contributing to staff recruitment, attendance reviews and personal development reviews for designated colleagues, as well as deputising for specialist pharmacists at relevant meetings when required.
  • To contribute to research and service evaluation by reviewing published evidence, identifying gaps in the evidence base, undertaking appropriate clinical audits and supporting research activity, including communicating findings and applying outcomes to practice.
  • To support pharmacy governance and quality improvement by identifying and addressing risk management issues, contributing to agreed projects and service priorities, monitoring relevant performance information and sharing appropriate regional and national best practice.
