Job summary

We have an Exciting opportunity for an Advanced Occupational Therapist in South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust to join Inpatient AHPs at Brooklands Hospital. You will be responsible for working as part of a multidisciplinary Therapy Team providing Occupational Therapy input within Assessment and Treatment Services and Forensic Learning Disability Services. You will manage a clinical caseload, delivering high-quality, person-centred interventions while contributing to the ongoing development and delivery of the Occupational Therapy service at Brooklands. The role involves supporting and supervising junior and support staff as appropriate, as well as leading on service development initiatives in line with Trust priorities and agreed timescales. You will also play a key role in shaping clinical practice and ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based occupational therapy provision across the service.

Main duties of the job

As an Advanced Occupational Therapist you will be responsible for managing a specialist clinical caseload comprising individuals with complex occupational therapy needs. You will be responsible for supporting the interpretation of referrals and undertaking structured initial interviews to establish a clear understanding of presentation and background history. You will be responsible for conducting comprehensive assessments to identify functional abilities, barriers to participation, and areas requiring therapeutic intervention. You will be responsible for supporting the formulation of individualised treatment approaches, working collaboratively with patients, carers, families, and multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure coordinated input. You will be responsible for managing the delivery of planned interventions across both inpatient and community settings, ensuring appropriate adaptation of approaches in response to clinical need and service context

Job responsibilities

TO provide strategic leadership within the inpatient Occupational Therapy service, contributing to service planning and operational direction to ensure delivery aligns with organisational priorities and quality standards. This will include actively participating in leadership discussions and supporting the implementation of agreed service improvements.

TO lead and oversee the coordination of inpatient Occupational Therapy provision, ensuring effective allocation of resources and smooth delivery of daily service functions across the team. This includes maintaining oversight of workflow efficiency and supporting consistent service performance across clinical areas.

TO provide clinical and managerial supervision to junior and support staff, ensuring safe, effective, and reflective practice in line with professional standards and Trust expectations. This includes facilitating regular supervision sessions and supporting professional development within the team.

TO ensure compliance with professional registration requirements by actively engaging in appraisal processes and continuous professional development activities. This includes maintaining up-to-date knowledge of best practice and demonstrating ongoing competency in clinical practice.

TO maintain high standards of communication with a wide range of stakeholders, ensuring information is conveyed clearly, accurately, and appropriately across multidisciplinary and inter-agency settings. This includes adapting communication approaches to meet the needs of individuals with complex presentations and diverse backgrounds.

TO support service improvement and governance activities through participation in audits, evaluation processes, and the development of innovative practice approaches within Occupational Therapy services. This includes contributing to quality assurance initiatives and promoting evidence-based practice across the service.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy with HCPC registration (or eligibility for registration). Experience of working within mental health, learning disability, or forensic inpatient services. Strong understanding of person-centred, recovery-focused Occupational Therapy practice. Demonstrable experience of managing a clinical caseload and delivering structured interventions. Evidence of leadership, supervision of staff, and effective multidisciplinary teamwork.
