Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an Advanced Mammographer in West Hertfordshire NHS Trust to join the Radiology Department at Watford General Hospital and St Albans City Hospital. In this role, you will be responsible for working closely with the Lead Breast Consultant, Radiology Breast Consultants, and the Radiology Management Team to provide leadership, management, and support to the breast imaging team. You will manage and support both clinical and non-clinical colleagues to deliver a high-quality, patient-focused service, ensuring the best possible experience for patients while meeting key performance standards and targets. You will play a vital role in driving service improvement, maintaining efficient and cost-effective service delivery within budget, and fostering strong engagement across multidisciplinary teams. The successful candidate will also provide support to the wider Radiography Department across both hospital sites, contributing to the delivery of safe, effective, and continuously improving imaging services.

Main duties of the job

As an Advanced Mammographer, you will be responsible for deputising for the Site Lead Radiographer in their absence, overseeing operational activities and ensuring continuity of service delivery. You will support departmental governance, contribute to decision-making as part of the senior team, and assist in the coordination of imaging services across the Trust. You will participate in the planning and implementation of service developments, providing professional input to help shape future service provision. You will also work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to maintain effective patient pathways, monitor progress against agreed objectives, and support the timely achievement of service targets.

Job responsibilities

To communicate with patients, relatives, and carers in a clear and empathetic manner, ensuring information is conveyed in an understandable way while addressing queries with patience and reassurance. You will adapt your communication style to different individuals to support effective engagement and cooperation during attendance.

To uphold and demonstrate respect for individual rights by consistently maintaining confidentiality and treating all patients with dignity and sensitivity. You will ensure that personal preferences and comfort are considered during all interactions within the clinical environment.

To accurately handle and verify patient-related information using designated electronic systems, ensuring data is recorded correctly and maintained in line with required standards. You will promptly highlight any inconsistencies or concerns to the appropriate senior member of staff for review.

To carry out administrative support tasks including preparation of appointment lists, updating records, and assisting with front-line reception duties when required. You will ensure that documentation is completed in a timely manner to support smooth operational workflows.

To assist in the collection and organisation of departmental information required for audit, reporting, and service monitoring purposes. You will complete structured data recording templates when requested to support evidence-based evaluation activities.

To engage in continuous learning by attending mandatory training sessions and participating in induction activities as required. You will support the familiarisation of new team members by demonstrating routine tasks and sharing procedural knowledge in a structured and consistent manner.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • HCPC registered Radiographer with BSc or DCR in Diagnostic Radiography.
  • Postgraduate certificate/diploma in Mammography.
  • Extensive experience in Mammography within a clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership and service/people management with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of CRIS systems and awareness of change management principles (desirable).
