Job overview
Make a lasting difference to patient care across surgery, critical care and the interface between services. We are seeking an experienced, forward-thinking clinical pharmacist to join us in this pivotal Band 8a role, combining advanced patient-facing practice with leadership in medicines safety, governance and service improvement.
This is an essential clinical role with a clear purpose: to assure the safe, effective and evidence-based use of medicines across surgical and critical care pathways. The post is predominantly patient-facing, with 0.6 WTE dedicated to surgical and critical care inpatient services and patient flow. The remaining 0.4 WTE will focus on vital interface and Patient Group Direction (PGD) responsibilities, ensuring staff receive timely, expert advice and support.
You will be an adaptable team player and a compassionate, credible leader who can influence practice across professional boundaries. You will communicate clearly, maintain exemplary clinical documentation and role-model the professional accountability expected at this level to colleagues across pharmacy and the wider multidisciplinary team.
If you are ready to combine advanced clinical practice with great teamwork, effective leadership and meaningful service improvement for our patients, we would be delighted to hear from you.
Main duties of the job
- Provide direct patient care and support safe, effective clinical treatment across surgery, critical care and patient flow.
- Optimise medicines use by guiding medical and non-medical prescribing practice and, where appropriate, independently prescribing or deprescribing.
- Apply local, regional and national guidance, demonstrating excellent antimicrobial stewardship.
- Use sound clinical judgement and evidence-based practice to manage medicines shortages that affect patient care.
- Write and contribute to Standard Operating Procedures, policies and guidelines, identifying and addressing gaps in local practice.
- Recognise medicines-related incidents and near misses, support timely resolution, and escalate or signpost concerns appropriately.
- Provide expert formulary advice, review clinical guidelines and lead the review of PGDs for the safe supply or administration of prescription-only medicines in line with locally agreed policy.
You will support the Pharmacist Clinical Team Manager in the delivery of the Pharmacy Vision and Values Strategy together with the other Clinical Pharmacy Team Leaders.
