Successful appointees will be encouraged and supported in achieving the competencies required for a Portfolio Pathway application in Histopathology, thereby entering the Specialty Register and eventually taking up a consultant position.
The job will consist of work in BCPS Cellular Pathology Department. Cellular Pathology is now fully consolidated and located in a purpose-built integrated Pathology Building located on the New Cross Hospital site and our services provide patient care to Walsall NHS Trust, Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, Dudley Group Foundation Trust, and the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. Our annual workload this year is 100,000 histology requests with around 154,000 histology specimens, supporting 59 MDTs across the region. The annual workload for the gynae cytology screening work for the West Midlands is approximately 400,000 samples. In addition, there are 4,000 non-gynae cytology samples.
The current clinical establishment comprises 31 Consultant Histopathologists 4 locum consultants and one Consultant Healthcare Scientists one Specialty Doctor, and 10 Histopathology Trainees. The clinical workforce is fully sub-specialised with each Consultant Histopathologists providing specialist expertise in one to four individual specialties, depending upon individual interest and workload.
he successful candidate will also be encouraged to develop specialist interests in two or more areas of histopathology. Portfolio Pathway fellows will be treated as equivalents to core and specialist trainees in Histopathology
