An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Band 7 Advanced Audiologist / Clinical Scientist to join the Auditory Implant Service at the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospital, part of UCLH, one of the UK’s leading specialist NHS trusts.
This post offers the chance to work within a highly specialised, internationally recognised auditory implant service, delivering complex care to paediatric and/ or adult patients using cochlear implants and other implantable hearing technologies.
You will manage a highly specialised clinical caseload with a high degree of autonomy, contribute to service development, and play a key role in education, training, and clinical governance.
Clinical The core of the role is managing a complex, specialist caseload of paediatric cochlear implant patients with a high degree of autonomy. This includes full audiological assessment (behavioural and objective), determining suitability for cochlear implantation, intra-operative measurements, and programming/mapping CI devices from all four manufacturers (Cochlear, Advanced Bionics, MED-EL, Oticon/Neurelec). The post holder also provides ongoing rehabilitation, troubleshooting, and follow-up, and works with families in often emotionally demanding circumstances around diagnosis and post-implantation expectations.
Main duties of the job
Communication and MDT working A significant part of the role involves communicating complex, sensitive information to patients, parents and carers — including diagnosis of hearing loss, implant suitability, and managing expectations. This includes joint working with speech and language therapists, psychologists, teachers of the deaf, and ENT/AVM consultants, as well as liaising with CI manufacturers and external agencies.
Management and leadership The post holder takes responsibility for day-to-day organisation within the paediatric CI service — including rostering, managing leave and sickness, stock ordering, and ensuring sufficient clinical cover. They line manage junior staff through supervision, appraisal, and objective setting, and support recruitment.
Education and research Training and supervising junior audiologists and students is expected, as is contributing to audit, research, and CPD. There is an expectation of presenting or publishing at a national or international level over time.
Operational Timely and accurate record-keeping in Trust systems (Epic, AuditBase etc.), report writing for GPs and local caregivers, monitoring waiting lists and referral trends, and ensuring equipment calibration and health and safety compliance.

Essential
- Demonstrable experience in the relevant clinical area and evidence of clinical competency with a complex patient caseload.
- Specialist knowledge of routine and non-routine diagnostic / therapeutic audiological assessment procedures, their interpretation and their implications for patient management
- Experience in formulating comprehensive management plans based on case history information and diagnostic test results, where management decisions may or may not be straightforward
- Experience of working with hearing impaired patients / parents / carers and associated professionals
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit, research, and / or presentations at scientific meetings.

Specific Requirements
Essential
- Excellent time management, planning and organisational skills within a clinical service.
- Highly developed skills where accuracy is important, such as taking ear impressions, use of probe tube microphone measurements.
- High degree of dexterity, coordination and sensory skills
- Regular visual display unit work.
- Ability to assist all patients groups (such as patients with physical limitations and a variety of complex needs) into and out of sound proofed rooms
- The postholder will need to be passed fit to perform full duties of the post, to be determined through occupational health with any reasonable aids provided where possible
Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential
- MSc in Clinical Audiology or equivalent level of knowledge/expertise in field CAC or equivalent post graduate experience
- Registered to practice as an Audiologist/ Clinical Scientist with either Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP).
- Significant post-graduate experience in relevant clinical area
- Evidence of post graduate CPD
- Applied theoretical knowledge of the relevant assessment and therapeutic/rehabilitative procedures for the management of audiological or vestibular conditions in adults and/or children
- Knowledge of impact of co-morbidities such as global delay or neurological conditions in the management of adults and/or children
Desirable
- Post graduate management/ leadership training or experience as supervisor
- Membership of BAA, BSA
