Job summary
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated person to a part time permanent Speech and Language Therapy Assistant post within the friendly, and supportive Adult Speech and Language Therapy team. We work Citywide, currently based at The Meadows Health Centre.
You will work as an integral member of the Adult Speech and Language therapy team, providing face-to-face rehabilitation to clients with swallowing and communication difficulties in community settings, such as their own home, care homes or clinic settings. A key aspect of the role is to deliver communication group therapy and training to others, including care home staff, with support and supervision from qualified clinicians. You will also provide support to the speech and language therapists by preparing therapy resources, such as communication picture aids, and collating medical information from medical notes, patients and carers to support with the triage process. Having a specialised role in working with people with swallowing disorders (dysphagia), such as carrying out screening assessments and reviewing swallow care-plans, you will be given the necessary support to complete our CityCare competency framework for Assistant Practitioners, with team specific competencies in communication and swallowing disorders. You will have regular opportunities for continuing professional development through attending our regular in-service training as well as relevant Clinical Excellence Network meetings.
Main duties of the job
The Speech and Language Therapy team work across Nottingham, supporting a wide variety of adult clients in their own homes, community settings including clinics, care and nursing homes. We offer virtual consultations and interventions. We work closely with other community health and social care teams, and the voluntary sector. Our clients present with a wide range of aetiologies including stroke, end of life, dementia, neurological, mental health and respiratory conditions.
Your responsibilities will include working autonomously to meet individual patient needs. You will have the ability to plan ongoing clinical interventions e.g. home visits, organising appointments, clinics and assessments. You will also be an excellent communicator with patients, carers and within the team. You will be quick to report any concerns you have about patient care and regularly raise any questions or ideas relating to the service with the rest of the team. You will have excellent rapport building skills with patients and their carers, as well as conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
You will be educated to Foundation degree or equivalent in a health related discipline, or will have evidence of previous suitable experience.
The post consists of 26.25 hours per week
A driving licence/ vehicle is essential

Job Purpose

Key Responsibilities
Clinical
1. To undertake individual treatment and interventions with patients under the supervision of qualified staff.
2. To review clients and adapt individual and group therapy programmes as appropriate.
3. To refer service users to external agencies and specialists when their needs are beyond the assistant practitioner role
4. To accept responsibility for a designated caseload, working independently and taking an active role in promoting independence and meeting the needs of the service user.
5. To promote well-being, safe mobility, transfers and effective communication. To provide instruction, advice and intervention to service users and carers in line with the team guidelines.
6. To assess, provide, and demonstrate use of equipment to promote independence e.g. using iPads/tablets to demonstrate therapy Apps or trialling alternative drinking cups.
7. To attend and contribute to team meetings and case discussions using effective communication.
8. To lead groups and carry out training packages under the supervision of qualified clinicians
9. To maintain comprehensive and accurate records in line with employers polices
Managerial and Leadership.
10. To provide support to other Assistant Practitioners as appropriate.
11. To feed into and support team service improvement initiatives
Education and Development
12. To ensure knowledge, skills and competencies are kept up to date and complete all relevant competencies within recognised time frames (as detailed in the competency guidelines).
13. To be involved in formal appraisal systems, supervision, and be active in identifying aims and objectives for personal development in line with departmental policy.
Clinical Governance.
14. To maintain a safe working environment and be aware of the necessity to comply with health and safety regulations.
15. To have regard at all times for the confidential nature of the work by adhering to confidentiality legislation and not to disclose information to unauthorised parties.
