An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Clinical Coding Department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. We are seeking enthusiastic, motivated and professionally accredited Clinical Coders (ACC) to join our established and supportive team.

As part of our commitment to attracting and retaining high‑quality coding professionals, this role includes a 15% Recruitment and Retention Premium, paid monthly in addition to basic salary.

The Trust has recently implemented Epic, our new Electronic Patient Record system, enabling us to offer fully remote, hybrid, or office‑based working arrangements. We welcome applications from ACC‑qualified Clinical Coders across the UK, including those living outside the Torbay area who wish to work remotely. For those preferring an on‑site environment, a dedicated coding office is available at Torbay Hospital.

Main duties of the job

As an Accredited Clinical Coder you will have experience of coding a variety of specialties  within an acute NHS organisation. You will have a flexible and adaptable approach to work  supporting the provision of high quality, accurate and timely coded clinical data through effective extraction and analysis of complex clinical information, independent judgement in the interpretation and sequencing of clinical data, adhering to national clinical coding standards, rules and conventions, to ensure the Trust data is accurate and robust.

The Clinical Coding Team is responsible for the extraction and translation of inpatient Clinical information using the ICD-10 and OPCS-4 Coding Classifications. This information is essential for the effective management of the Trust and crucial to the National Tariff Payment System that underpins Trust income. Coded data is also important for clinical audit, governance and research.

  • You will be responsible for the clinical coding of inpatient and day-case episodes across all specialties provided at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust .
  • You will liaising with Clinicians and Clinical teams on a regular basis to verify data recorded in the Electronic Patient Record. to ensure coding accuracy and integrity are maintained at the highest level.
  • You will act as mentor to and assist in the training of less experienced coders.

  • Provide accurate, timely and complete clinical coding in accordance with national standards
  • Analyse complex clinical documentation to assign ICD‑10 and OPCS‑4 codes
  • Contribute to the delivery of high‑quality data to support Trust performance, commissioning and clinical governance
  • Work collaboratively within a professional coding team to maintain high standards of data quality
  • Participate in ongoing audit, training and continuous professional development activities
