Job overview

The post holder as a member of the Clinical Transfusion Team is responsible for assisting with the provision  of a clinical transfusion service across the Trust, and for ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to a large  cohort of patients so that that the needs of the patient are placed at the centre of care delivery.   The post holder will contribute to the provision of education for nursing, medical and multi-disciplinary staff  in the management of patients receiving blood transfusion, and in ensuring that agreed guidelines and  protocols are followed satisfactorily.

Main duties of the job

The Blood Transfusion Practitioner role involves acting as a resource, providing advice and support for all  staff across the Trust, and visiting clinical areas and liaising with staff in an investigative, advisory, and  teaching capacity. The role also includes facilitating the implementation of changes in practice, undertaking  audit in the field of blood transfusion and its alternatives, reviewing, and updating Trust protocols and  policies, and the investigation and reporting of incidents and complaints.

  • To act in an advisory role to promote the safe and effective use of blood components and investigate  ways of reducing blood component use and wastage, as a key member of the Trust’s Hospital  Transfusion Committee (HTC) and Hospital Transfusion Team (HTT): This includes supporting and  promoting the use of alternatives to transfusion and blood conservation techniques.   2. To promote understanding of the transfusion process across the Trust and to communicate changes in both expected practice and blood components to all clinical staff, whilst acting as a liaison  between the blood transfusion laboratory and clinical staff (and other staff groups), as appropriate.   3. To be a visible presence in clinical areas to ensure that the clinical area is supported to achieve safe  transfusion practice.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Current, evidenced-based clinical or laboratory knowledge regarding transfusion practice: Better Blood Transfusion policies and initiatives, Knowledge of the EU Directive for blood safety & quality, NHSLA standards, SHOT, MHRA, BCSH & NICE guidelines.

Experience

Essential

  • Working as a member of a team & autonomous practice.
  • Experience in research/audit.
  • Teaching experience: develop, implement, and evaluate multi-modal training programmes.

Desirable

  • Specialist experience in blood transfusion.

Skills /Abilities

Essential

  • Excellent multi-modal communication skills.
  • IT systems/keyboard skills, Intermediate use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Presentation skills & public speaking ability.
  • Analytical skills: interpret, analyse, and utilise data effectively.

Desirable

  • Report and policy writing skills

Education/ Qualificaitons

Essential

  • First level Registration with NMC / other appropriate professional body.
  • Teaching qualification
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Leadership course / relevant experience
  • MSc in health service-related subject or equivalent or working towards.
