Job overview

Fixed Term | 12 months

This fellowship offers a comprehensive educational experience in the management of paediatric and young adult hip conditions across both paediatric and adult settings.

Training will be based at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) and Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (DBTH), providing exposure to hip preservation techniques from cradle to adulthood.

The service is led by Mr Sanjeev Madan across both organisations, alongside Miss Caroline Blakey, Mr Shankar Thiagarajah and Mr Nick Green at SCFT, offering expert supervision and mentorship.

The fellow will gain experience in a wide range of hip preservation procedures, including both arthroscopic and open techniques, across both centres. There will also be exposure to joint arthroplasty in younger patients, providing a well‑rounded and valuable training experience.

This post represents an excellent opportunity for candidates seeking specialist expertise in hip preservation within a high‑quality, collaborative training environment

Main duties of the job

The role includes participation in a 1 in 11 or 1 in 12 on‑call rota, with prospective cover shared with existing fellows and three Yorkshire specialist trainees.

Fellows are involved in a wide range of clinical activities, including elective and fracture clinics, elective theatre sessions, trauma theatre sessions, and ward rounds. There is a weekly Friday morning MDT and clinical governance meeting at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT), with equivalent meetings held at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (DBTH). Participation by all middle‑grade doctors is expected.

In exceptional circumstances, appointees may be required to cover colleagues’ sessions due to sickness. Total working hours remain under 48 per week. These posts are designed specifically for educational training purposes.

Research is actively encouraged, with opportunities and protected time available for involvement in research projects, service evaluations and audit programmes. Completion of audit work is mandatory during the tenure of the post.
