Job overview

The Older Persons Assessment Unit is a 20‑bedded front‑door acute frailty assessment unit, providing rapid assessment and early intervention for older adults who present with acute or complex needs. In addition, OPAU has Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) capacity, including 7 trolleys and 2 chair spaces, enabling us to manage patients promptly, avoid unnecessary admissions, and support effective patient flow across the hospital.

Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred care that promotes independence, dignity, and safe, timely discharge planning.

To provide a full comprehensive administrative, clerical and non-clinical support of the professional staff involved in patient care and to work as a key member of the ward team by supporting a patient focused and friendly environment.

The Ward Clerk will be flexible in developing the role so that individual needs of the ward are cared for.

Main duties of the job

To provide efficient and professional administrative and clerical support This will include:

  • To receive patients and relatives in a friendly and courteous manner and provide relevant information to patients and relatives clearly and in a way that patients and relatives understand. To orientate patients and relatives to the environment and facilities that are available
  • To answer all telephone enquiries, taking and relaying messages in a polite and helpful manner, taking action as appropriate.
  • To liaise with nurses, Doctors, GP’s and other members of the team obtaining and communicating necessary information accurately to assist the provision of a quality service for the patients.
  • To maintain an efficient filling system for tracking of health records.

To maintain the admissions book, inpatient board and patient details/ appointments on the patient administration system efficiently so that there is timely and accurate information available at all times on patients
