Job overview

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated, committed individual with a background in Upper GI/general surgery nursing to join our dynamic and friendly Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist team based in University Hospital of Wales. The UGI Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist role is varied and very much focused on the holistic care of patients with a UGI cancer, and supporting their families/carers.

The UGI Cancer CNS team is the tertiary centre for all UGI cancer services for South and Mid Wales, meaning patients are directed to Cardiff and Vale for all cancer procedures. The team is made up of 1 band 7 and a 3 band 6 CNS.  The wider UGI team includes five consultants, their medical team and their secretaries. Working together closely with the team is of upmost importance.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

The role requires good organisational skills, with a commitment to the development and provision of high quality nursing care.

The post holder will use clinical expertise, leadership and management skills to provide specialist UGI cancer support, nursing advice, support and information to patients (in-patient and out-patient) and their carers/loved ones. The CNS would play a significant role in setting standards/guidelines, undertaking audits, service improvement initiatives, education of others and disseminating good practice. The post holder will need to be flexible and enthusiastic to meet the needs of an evolving service and developing role.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake MSc modules, relevant to the role as this is a trainee position.  Upon successful completion the candidate will become a Band 7.

The post holder will also work as an important member of the Multidisciplinary Team, acting as a keyworker for a group of patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be able to find a full Job description and Person Specification attached within the supporting documents or please click “Apply now” to view in Trac.

Appointment will be at a band 7, in accordance with Annex 21 trainee terms and conditions.

If successful the candidate will be expected to complete a Masters Qualification  which will be supported by the Health Board.

During your training period, you will receive a percentage of the full Band 7 pay rate in accordance with Annex 21 of the NHS Terms and Conditions of Service.   This is likely to be around 75% of the full band 7 rate.  The exact percentage will be determined based on your existing experience and qualifications, as well as the expected length of time required to complete your MSc and achieve full competence for the role.

If  a current employee is successful and moves into a trainee role and the training salary is lower than their existing pay, they will retain their current salary for the duration of training to avoid financial detriment.
