Job overview

The post-holder will work without direct supervision and may be required to take charge of the Critical Care Unit for a span of duty in the absence of the Unit Manager or Matron.

Key responsibilities will include the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care, effective leadership and staff management/development

The post holder will always work within the NMC’s Code of Professional Conduct.

Main duties of the job

You will lead, provide  and  supervise  a very high standard of compassionate care to our patients, whilst being accountable for staffing issues and managing a large team. You will be supporting the safety and quality agenda of patient care and staff management, ensuring that the values and objectives of the Trust are met, whilst improving patient outcomes.

Likewise, you will support the journey of the patient from admission to discharge, identify risk and formulate actions to reduce this risk and ensure patient throughput is effective. You will support the Matron, Consultants and the Multi Disciplinary Team and deputise for seniors in their absence.

We are an 33 bedded area that covers surgical and medical patients. We provide level 2 and 3 care to patients that require extra support in multi organ failure.  In addition to this, we have a 4-bedded enhanced surgical recovery unit.   We have a robust team and a Practice Educator to support safe care within the unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Will be able to effectively manage staff sickness, appraisal, education and clinical needs as well as be aware of their own CPD requirements. Be able to stand in for Matron, attend and present at meetings and be a positive ambassador for Critical Care both inside and outside of the Trust environment. This is not exhaustive of Management duties.
  • Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients/clients.
  • Responsible for the safe custody, checking and administration of drugs, including inotropes
  • Exercise effective leadership acting as an exemplary role model for the unit team.
  • Ensure effective communication with patients and their carers.and the MDT
  • Ensure compliance with Trust policies and procedures.
  • Manage staff sickness absence through Trust policy
  • Monitor performance and educational needs of self and others through appraisal system
  • Collaborate with the clinical practice facilitators to develop and promote an effective and responsive clinical learning environment
  • Act as a mentor for all pre and post registration nurses
  • Act at all times in a manner that upholds the reputation of the Trust and safeguards the wellbeing and dignity of patients and their relatives and always act within the NMC  Code of Conduct
