Job overview

The department of Anaesthesia and Intensive care is looking for an experienced Trust-Grade doctor to join our existing team to provide cover for the senior resident doctor in the ICU rota.

This is a full-time post. The post holder will primarily work in intensive care, providing daytime and night time cover in the ICU. Also, during their non-on call period, they would take part in theatre sessions, providing anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgery.

There is a dedicated 24-hour consultant cover with immediate daytime and distant night time supervision. The post-holder will be part of the in-hospital cardiac arrest and trauma team. It will also provide an opportunity to gain anaesthetic experience in multiple surgical specialties, including general surgery, colorectal, orthopaedics and trauma, gynaecology, and ENT.

Main duties of the job

This post would be ideally suited to trainees who have completed core training competencies (CT3). are either wishing to take time out of training or have not secured an ongoing training post. Overseas senior-trained doctors are welcome to apply, provided they meet the essential and desirable criteria outlined in the person specification.

Applicants should have at least 3 years of previous anaesthetic training and the FRCA Primary or equivalent. Applicants must have sufficient experience to be able to competently manage acutely deteriorating patients. The applicant should be competent in advanced airway management and be able to undertake intrahospital and interhospital transfers.

Opportunities for study leave and participation in departmental education and quality improvement projects will also be encouraged. The appointed candidates will have a study budget to help achieve their training needs. They will have a dedicated clinical supervisor to support their learning objectives. The department has a history of successfully guiding trust-grade doctors to exam success and securing full-time training numbers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The critical care unit is a modern purpose-built 14-bed unit with a wide case mix, including medical and surgical patients. The unit also provides tertiary cardiology services for the county, managing comatose cardiac arrest survivors, post-PCI patients, and cardiogenic shock patients. There are three FICE mentors in the department, providing plenty of opportunity to develop FUSIC cardiac accreditation. The unit has an excellent research record, taking part in multi-centre RCTs. The candidates would also benefit from regular teaching sessions and simulations. Also, successful candidates will have the opportunity to further develop their advanced airway skills and ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia in theatres.
