We are offering an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated nurse or midwife, with current NMC registration to pursue a career in Health Visiting within NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

We are looking for an experienced and passionate practitioner to undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting) at SCQF level 11, studying with an Higher Education Institute , which will enable the successful candidate to achieve the practical skills as well as the Standards of Proficiency for the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SPCHN) qualification.

Please note the academic component may be facilitated by a distance learning course

Candidates are required to demonstrate a strong track record of leadership skills, be highly motivated, and ideally have experience of working with children and families in a community setting.

We are looking for candidates with experience and understanding of the health needs of children and families; who want to make a difference to improving the health and wellbeing of pre-school children, and have knowledge of Scotland’s Public Health Agenda, including Getting it Right for Every Child, The Promise, and the Children and Young People’s Act.

Candidates must be able to work in partnership with families, local authorities, and a range of other stakeholders to deliver high quality, evidence based, trauma informed person-centred care.

Candidates must:

  • Be an experienced, qualified Nurse or Midwife with current NMC registration.
  • Have a first degree in a relevant subject.
  • Be free to commence study September 2026

We will offer:

  • A 12 month contract as a Trainee Health Visitor, 35 hours per week with an AfC Band 7 Annex 21 salary.
  • Work Based Learning within a Health Visiting team, where you will be supported by a supervisory and assessment team, including a Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor.
  • Protected Learning time will be facilitated
  • Funding to fully cover the tuition fees.
  • A 36-hour AfC Band 7 Health Visiting post will be offered upon successful completion of the programme and registration on Part 3 of the NMC Register.
  • Our Public health Nursing service is aligned to NMHAP career development
  • Shortlisted candidates will be given the opportunity to spend time with a qualified HV team
