The post holder will work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant guidelines, delivering high-quality, safe, and compassionate peri-operative care to a defined group of patients. As a Scrub Nurse, they will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care throughout the peri-operative period, including discharge planning from the theatre suite. The role involves providing skilled assistance to anaesthetists and surgeons within Moorfields Eye Hospital operating theatres, maintaining the highest standards of aseptic technique, infection control, and patient safety. The post holder will act promptly and effectively in emergencies, demonstrating sound clinical judgment and competence. They will promote and support the Moorfields Nursing Strategy, maintaining a visible and professional presence for staff and patients. Effective liaison with the Patient Booking Team is essential to ensure theatre lists are efficiently managed and resources are optimised. The nurse will foster effective communication across the multidisciplinary team at Moorfields and its satellite sites, ensuring continuity of care. They will also support the learning and development of student nurses and healthcare assistants, acting as mentor or assessor as required. Flexibility is key, with the expectation to provide support across North West sites when needed to ensure consistent, patient-focused surgical care.

Main duties of the job

• To work according to the Nursing & Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a named nurse for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for:-  Protecting and supporting the health of individual patients and clients.  The assessment of care during the peri-operative period.  The development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care including discharge planning from the theatre suite for each patient.To provide skilled assistance to the Surgeons and Anaesthetists in the Operating Department at Ealing and at Northwick Park or Potters Bar if required.Have the skills, knowledge and expertise to be able to take appropriate action when dealing with emergencies.To be a visible presence for Moorfields Staff and patients.To promote and maintain effective communication within the multi-disciplinary team between Moorfields Eye Hospital and the host Hospitals.To facilitate and support student nurses and others to develop their competence and skills To participate in the training and development of Health Care Assistants and complete assessors training as required.To work alongside Senior nursing team members of Moorfields at Northwick park and Potters Bar hospitals to facilitate and reduce surgical cancellations by ensuring policies and process are in place and are amended as appropriate.

MAIN RESPONSIBILTITES Clinical and Patient Care

Responsible for carrying out clinical ophthalmic practice within designated clinical areas, ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations for patients is provided from admission through to discharge. Will be responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of ophthalmic work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience. To work as the scrub and circulating nurse in theatres To act as advocate for patients within the area, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines. To ensure that patients’ receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.

Is accountable for his/her practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his/her knowledge and professional competence. Will act in accordance with local, hospital and statutory guidelines and policies including health and safety initiatives. Will compile a personal & professional portfolio (in conjunction with the performance management process and the compilation of a Personal Development Plan).

Communication

Provide specialised advice concerning the care and treatment of identified groups or categories of ophthalmic patients/clients. Communicate effectively and efficiently with all members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding patient care.

Education & Professional Development

Act as a role model, giving guidance, counselling and support to unqualified staff and students. Actively contribute to the teaching programme within the ward. Act as a mentor and introduce new staff members to their role within the team.

Compliance and Governance

Maintain clear and legible patient records in accordance with both Trust and professional standards for record keeping. In conjunction with the Sister/Charge Nurse and other senior members of the multi-disciplinary team to develop a positive culture and environment for both staff and patients. In conjunction with other senior members of the multi-disciplinary team be responsible for and maintain a high standard of care within the service which is evidence based, consistent with legislation and embodies a recovery focus of care.
