An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Theatre Assistant to join the team in theatre.

The job involves a high level of cleaning, maintenance and preparation of the theatre suite, as well as the safe and timely transport of patients to and from the Operating Theatre. The use of floor buffers and scrubbing machines is a requirement of the job, as is cleaning the staff restrooms and changing rooms.

An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for this post.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist in the collection and return of patients and their belongings to and from Theatre Department, wards, diagnostic services, post anaesthesia unit.
  • Collection and replacement of medical gases, transfer of blood components, linen, beds, trolleys, theatre equipment and pharmacy deliveries
  • Responsibility for environmental cleanliness.
  • Inspection of patient transportation equipment. Transfer of faulty equipment to EBME.
  • Dispose of clinical and non-clinical waste including dirty linen as per Trust protocols.
  • Stocking and cleaning areas out of housekeeping checklist (for example storage cabinets).
  • Assist in checking of the fire safety equipment in the department.
  • Adhere to Trust and Departmental Policies and Procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality in matters relating to patients and staff.
  • Specimen transportation as required.
  • Keep fluid store area clean and tidy, dispose of empty boxes.
  • Deliver on-call sheets and theatre lists as required.

  • Keep linen storage areas tidy and stock up blanket warmers.
  • Appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Maintain compliance with Mandatory Training requirements.
  • Completion of timesheets and work logs /schedules or other attendance system as required.
  • Carrying out daily duties as instructed by Theatre Co-Ordinator and as per cleaning schedules.
  • General / routine cleaning of operating department, clinical and non-clinical compartments / offices, communal areas and public areas and toilets in line with the local cleaning schedules as designated.
  • Assisting in any infection control deep cleans as directed by the Theatre Co-Ordinator.
  • Ensuring that your designated cleaning cupboard and cleaning trolley is kept clean, is fully stocked to the agreed levels, and is organised at all times.
  • Ensuring that all designated cleaning equipment in your area is thoroughly cleaned and appropriately sterilized after use to minimize the spread of infections. This should include replaceable parts e.g., filters in vacuum cleaners, floor pads etc.
  • Carrying out cleaning in accordance with the local frequency schedules and procedures.
  • Assisting with any corrective actions that may be identified as part of the frequent auditing of cleanliness and the patient environment.
  • Ensuring that correct and safe methods of work are always employed with extra care shown to the safety of patients, staff and visitors.
  • Assist in the receipt and storage of delivered provisions as required and as directed by the Theatre Co-Ordinator.
  • Replenishing all consumables in designated areas in line with local frequency schedules i.e., toilet paper, soap, and paper towels.
  • Disposal of waste through the appropriate waste stream in line with Trust Policy and procedures.
  • Ensuring that the waste hold areas are kept clean, tidy, and well organized as required.
  • Checking of equipment prior to use to ensure all faults are reported to the supervisor as they develop.
  • Reporting any accidents/dangerous occurrences to the Theatre Co-Ordinator and participating in the completion of all related accident forms Datix.
  • Assist with some elements of patient movement activities as required and as directed by Coordinator.
  • Assist with receipt & distribution of product via delivery schedules as required and as directed by the Theatre Co-Ordinator (e.g., linen, waste streams, consumable products, patient samples etc.).
  • Assist with delivery of products manually in the event of AGV failure / non-compliance as directed by Coordinator.
  • Attend relevant statutory and non-statutory training.
  • Carry out duties in accordance with departmental training and Trust policies and codes of practice
