Job overview

To work as a recovery nurse, caring for patients during the immediate post operative recovery period  through to discharge to the ward, or home.  The post holder will implement basic nursing healthcare independently and practice in their own clinical area of practice to the agreed competency level.  The post holder will work as part of the multidisciplinary team to provide the highest quality of care possible for the patients.  They will maintain patients confidentiality, dignity, personal and religious beliefs at all times.

They will be expected to work flexibly and may be required to help in other areas of the department or hospital.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated person to work in Main Theatres and day surgery. We are seeking experienced and newly qualified professional nurses/ODPs with excellent clinical skills and up to date knowledge in Gynaecology, General Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Urology, Paediatrics, and Emergency Surgery.

You will have the motivation and vision qualities necessary to work with theatre and day surgery team. As a valuable member of our team, you will deliver high standards of pre-, peri- and postoperative care, and have the ability to support and develop your skills to facilitate excellent patient care in our department.

You must be a Registered Nurse (NMC) or Registered Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC). We offer excellent educational opportunities from in-house study courses to post graduate education.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Implement basic nursing healthcare independently in the Recovery area.
  • Implement new/complex care with supervision.
  • Practise in recovery clinical area and ensure to be competent in recovering all types of post-operative patients.
  • Ensure the use of safe techniques when moving and handling patients and equipment.
  • Implement research based practice as required.
  • Participate with the multi-disciplinary team in decision making regarding patient care.
  • Accurately document care and evaluate.
  • Recognise potential clinical challenges and ways of dealing with them.
  • Assist in other areas of the department as required within competencies.
  • Participate in shift pattern including weekdays, weekends and unsocial hours.
  • Assess care needs and develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care. Participate in achieving, monitoring and maintaining set standards of care ensuring safe practice and reporting if these standards fall below an acceptable level.
  • Assist in proposing and implementing change.
  • Ensure that due regard is given to customs, values and beliefs of all patients.
