Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic Band 5 to join our friendly Pain Team, working in our designated clinic in Calderdale.

The right candidate will be keen to learn, and passionate about providing patient centred care to patients with long term conditions. There will be a mix of working in out-patient clinics, and assisting with day case procedures which include x-ray guided injections, which entail wearing appropriate PPE. including sessions with x-ray gowns

You will also be involved in the development of our service, as the ever changing world of pain management continues to evolve.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of evidence based individualised programmes of care for patients attending the pain clinic, as outpatient for a procedure or attending a clinic appointment and to assist the Clinical Nurse Specialists on the wards as required.  The post holder will also assist in the management and organisation of nursing work in the department.

The post holder will work mainly at the Calderdale site, but maybe required to work on other sites within CHFT.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • To ensure that high standards of nursing care are given and maintained, and act when standards are not being maintained.
  • To participate in the planning of patient care
  • To recognise changes in patients’ conditions which require the intervention of others and refer on as appropriate.
  • To clearly present the patient’s points of view to others, including promoting and protecting the interests and dignity of patients
  • To ensure own practice is evidence based and contribute to the development of nursing practice in own area.
  • To carry out nursing procedures and interventions as required, in accordance with Trust Policies
  • To ensure that all relevant information regarding the patient is communicated to other disciplines as required and is correctly documented as per Trust Policy
  • To maintain the highest standards of asepsis in the preparation for, and duration of clinical procedures. This incorporates the ANTT guidelines laid down within the Trust.
  • To maintain good communication with patients, offering support, reassurance, and explanations during pain procedures
  • Always maintain privacy and dignity for patients.
  • Ensure that patient care needs are recognised and addressed while in the department.
  • To ensure safe discharge of patients from the department
  • To act as nurse in charge if required
  • To demonstrate the ability to work as an effective member of the team but have the initiative to work unsupervised but closely supported team structure.
  • To work in partnership with patients and families when planning care.
  • To have a willingness to take on extended clinical roles linked to the department.
  • To act as an advocate for the patient and family, including promoting and protecting their interests, rights, equality, inclusion, and privacy
  • To act as a Link Nurse as required
  • To manage verbal complaints, informing senior staff and refer on complaints when unable to resolve.
  • To develop and expand pain management knowledge and skills.
  • To support the development of other team members
  • To be able to oversee multiple clinics and provide support and accountability to non-registered staff in the immediate clinical area.
  • To assist in pain clinic treatment sessions, including X-Ray procedures, using the appropriate protective clothing
  • To treat or refer on patients with minor conditions.
  • To contribute to and participate in programs of Audit, including utilisation of results in practice.

Professional Duties

  • To work within the NMC Code of professional practice, and within the policies, procedures and guidelines of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust
  • To be aware of and adhere to Trust Policies relating to the control and administration of drugs.
  • To ensure that high standards of nursing care are given and maintained, and to act when standards are not being maintained.
  • To be flexible to work within areas or departments to meet the demands of changing service needs.
  • To provide mentorship and preceptorship to newly qualified staff and students, new starters, and students, encouraging an effective learning environment
  • To take responsibility for own continuing professional development and performance, including identifying own development needs and maintain own development and revalidation.
  • To maintain accurate documentation and be responsible for monitoring documentation of junior colleagues
  • To act as an innovative and enthusiastic role model, providing leadership, guidance, and advice to staff on operational and professional issues

Managerial Duties

  • To take an active role in risk assessment, supporting implementation of strategies to minimise the risk, ensuring incidents and near misses are reported.
  • To participate in investigation of incidents/complaints as required
  • Provide training and support others in their development, act as a mentor/preceptor and participate in appraisals for junior staff.
  • To have an awareness of team members skills/capabilities and be able to delegate tasks appropriately.
  • To contribute to the development of the clinical area, through contribution of new ideas to improve patient care/experience.
  • To recognise, prevent where possible and manage areas of conflict, ensuring service manager is aware if unable to resolve.

  • Participate in regular supervision.
  • Attend all mandatory training.
  • Participate annually identifying, developing, and agreeing your own development plan with your Line Manager using the Trust Appraisal.
  • Comply with all Trust policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Carry out duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunity Policy.
  • Seek advice and support from Line Manager whenever necessary.
  • Maintain professional conduct always including appearance.
  • Ensure maintenance of Professional Registration.
