Job overview

Are you a compassionate, motivated nurse who thrives in a fast-paced clinical environment where no two days are the same?

Do you want to be part of a forward‑thinking Trust that values teamwork, kindness, and high‑quality patient care?

If so, we’d love to welcome you to the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at the Royal Surrey.

Our AMU is at the heart of our hospital’s emergency and urgent medical care pathway. It’s a dynamic, supportive environment where you’ll develop strong clinical skills, build confidence, and make a meaningful difference to patients at some of their most vulnerable moments.

You’ll work as part of a friendly multi‑disciplinary team that prides itself on delivering safe, compassionate, evidence‑based care. Whether you’re newly qualified or an experienced nurse looking for a fresh challenge, AMU is a fantastic place to consolidate skills, grow professionally, and be part of a team that genuinely supports each other.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 5 Staff Nurse in AMU, you will:

  • Provide high‑quality, individualised care to patients with a wide range of acute medical conditions.
  • Carry out holistic patient assessments, develop care plans, and deliver safe, effective interventions.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, families and the wider multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Support junior colleagues, students and healthcare assistants as part of your role.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to audits, quality improvement, and governance activities.
  • Uphold the NMC Code and the Trust’s values—demonstrating integrity, openness and professionalism at all times.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

At Royal Surrey, we are committed to helping you grow. You’ll have access to:

A structured preceptorship programme (for newly qualified nurses). Continuous professional development opportunities tailored to your goals. Training in clinical skills such as ECGs, venepuncture, IV additives and more. Leadership development for those wishing to progress within Acute Medicine.

We’d love to hear from you if you:

  • Are a Registered Nurse (NMC Level 1 or 12).
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and a caring, patient‑centred approach.
  • Work well under pressure and enjoy a fast‑moving clinical environment.
  • Bring enthusiasm, teamwork and a commitment to high standards of care.
  • Value diversity, openness and collaborative working.
