Job overview

We are looking to recruit a flexible and enthusiastic Band 4 Specimen Reception Supervisor for our GEH Site in Nuneaton.

There are multiple specimen reception areas and ancillary data entry facilities across the CWPS network. This post is to support the Section Manager in the day to day operational management of one or more of these facilities. The post holder will be responsible for delivering training and the development of Biomedical Assistant (BMA) staff. They will be responsible for supervision BMA staff in reception and/or laboratory areas, and allocation of work in conjunction with section managers to ensure a smooth workflow. There may also be an element of more advanced specimen processing dependant on the area of employment.

Full training and support will be given.

The successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly across shifts and weekends in line with service requirements.

Main duties of the job

  • Assists the Section Manager in the daily organisation and direction of staff working in the designated specimen reception/laboratory area and ancillary booking in areas.
  • Undertake Competency assessments of the specimen reception procedures to all new staff. To participate in appraisals and personal reviews and to work to achieve personal objectives.
  • Assists the Section Manager in maintaining the annual leave and sickness records for staff working in the designated Specimen Reception Area.
  • Produce rotas where applicable to cover duties in the designated work area

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To be fully competent in all aspects of the operation of the designated Pathology Specimen Reception Area(s), and the ancillary booking in areas, enabling the post-holder to contribute to the work of the department.
  • Be familiar with the higher level BMA duties performed throughout the laboratory areas, and where appropriate perform such tasks.
  • Act as the second point of contact for phone calls and face-to-face enquires where more demanding enquires are made. Calls to be dealt with in a professional manner.
  • Liaises with staff in all other areas of pathology, ensuring the timely distribution and processing of samples across the pathology network.
  • Oversee the dispatching and posting of samples to reference facilities ensuring compliance with all statutory regulations.
  • Be responsible to the section manager for the operation and periodic maintenance of the modular pre-analytical system, or other analyser systems as appropriate. Ensures that all staff involved receive appropriate training to ensure that they are able to carry out the periodic maintenance and troubleshooting to ensure the continuous operation of the system(s).
  • Work within Pathology Standard Operating procedures and general laboratory procedures and policies.
  • Record and investigate delegated laboratory and non-laboratory non-conformities.
  • Participate in quality system audits.
