Sussex Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Network
The Sussex Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Network is being established to develop a networked solution for the provision of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) services across Sussex. This will continue to support & develop further integration across Sussex. The post holder will hold an ESHT and work at East Sussex managing outpatient and day case patients from Eastbourne and Hastings.
Elective surgery requiring an overnight stay is transferred to BSUH or QVH.
Emergency care is delivered from QVH who operate a well-established hub and spoke arrangement across Surrey, Sussex and Kent. The network maximises the strengths of each unit, enable excellence in collaborative working and deliver safe, high quality and compassionate care.
Main duties of the job
- The Specialty Doctor will be required to provide a senior level of staff for the Department.
- The Specialty Doctor will attend out-patient clinics, both general and specialist, with his/her supervising consultants.
- Dependant on the experience of the Specialty Doctor, he/she may be offered an independent theatre list.
- Assess and manage where appropriate patients with maxillofacial trauma who may attend the accident and emergency department at Eastbourne District General Hospital during normal working hours in the weekdays.
- There will be administrative duties and other ad hoc attendances at clinics, theatre, etc. with other consultants as required in the absence of the regular junior members of staff.
- The Specialty Doctor will work under the supervision of and be responsible to his/her respective Consultant, or the on-call Consultant.
- The post will be based at Eastbourne District General Hospital. The appointee will be required to travel to Conquest Hospital or Uckfield community Hospital when necessary.
- In case of difficulties of any kind, the Specialty Doctor will seek the advice of the appropriate consultant. The Specialty Doctor is not expected to participate in any work beyond his/her level of expertise.

- The successful candidate will participate in the regular Department Teaching and Audit meetings

Job Purpose
The role of the Specialty Doctor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is central to the effective functioning of the Oral & Maxillofacial Department. As a Specialty Doctor in Oral Surgery, you will assume a central role in the provision of specialised and expert care to patients with complex oral and maxillofacial conditions. Your primary responsibility is to support the clinical team in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients requiring oral surgery interventions, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and safety.
