Main duties of the job

  • You will be part of the multidisciplinary clinical team as specialty doctor in the Emergency Department. • Provide high quality care, knowledge, and skills for the patients either directly or by supervision and floor management of the junior clinical staff • To maintain the standards of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and the West Suffolk Hospital NHS Foundation Trust • To assume clinical responsibility for patients brought to the department by the emergency services, self-referring or referred by GP • Dealing with unexpected emergencies including those resulting from infectious diseases like COVID-19 • To be part of Trauma Team co-ordinated management of major trauma • To be immediately available for opinion, guidance and advice on any patient seen by a junior clinician in the ED at any time during the rostered duty shift • To assist in conducting follow-up review of patients where considered appropriate by the Consultants • To contribute to the production of departmental clinical management guidelines in line with evidence-based best practice • To attend in the event of a hospital Major Incident call if available and off duty • Maintain patient confidentiality • Identify and act appropriately upon Safeguarding issues in children appropriately

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The department is a 24/7 unit dealing with unselected patients of all ages. Patients referred from General Practitioners to Surgical and Medical specialties are seen and assessed by the relevant doctors in the Emergency Assessment Unit or ED.

The facilities in the ED include: • 2 Receptions and three waiting areas, one dedicated to children • Triage room • Three Resuscitation bays (one fully paediatric equipped) • Fully Independent Infectious controlled area especially for receiving COVID patients. • Eight low dependency cubicles • Three bay ENP zone including eye cubicle • Separated Paediatric Emergency Unit • X-ray facility for ED within footprint of the department • Relatives room • Fully equipped teaching room with Monitor solely for ED use
