Job overview

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative and progressive SpecilatyDoctor to join our Clinical Immunology and Allergy Consultant team.

The post will initially be based primarily at City Health Campus. However, the Trust will be reconfiguring its services in preparation for the implementation of the Right Care Right Here Programme and the post holder may therefore be required to work at any of the Trust’s sites. The immunology and allergy service are currently in a  a self-contained unit within the retained estates. The clinical immunology service continue to carry out some outpatient work at MMUH and Sandwell Hospital.

Working collaboratively in specialty with consultants and CNSs to provide and maintain Allergy and Immunology services in line with strategic requirements, whilst developing a special interest to also support accreditation.

This post was created in view of expanding service and is advertised as 18-month fixed term contract with possibility of a permanent post in future.

Main duties of the job

  • To collaborate and work to maintain Allergy and Immunology services in line with strategic requirements.
  • To provide, with consultants and CNSs in the specialty, routine Immunology and Allergy services to the Trust.
  • To develop a special interest to support those of the consultants, accreditation requirements and in accordance with the priorities of the Trust.
  • To take responsibility for the professional supervision and appraisal of junior medical and nursing staff, in conjunction with colleagues.
  • To participate, where appropriate, in the education and training of junior doctors, medical students, nurses, paramedics and general practitioners.
  • To liaise with medical staff in other specialties and participate in clinical meetings and postgraduate activities in the Trust.
  • To maintain and develop good communications with general practitioners.
  • To participate in research in accordance with priorities agreed within the Clinical Groups and the Trust within available resources.
  • To demonstrate a firm commitment to the principles of clinical governance

Take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the proper functioning of the clinical service, working with clinical and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national maximum waiting times and developing clinical pathways in line with the maximum 18-week patient pathway guarantee.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The service covers the area local to Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trusts as well as providing an Immunology service to a wider area. Service currently accepts referrals from primary care physicians as well as specialties from other and own hospital. More than 55% of referrals to the service are from outside the immediate area.

There are 3 enthusiastic consultant immunologist and GPwER in allergy, 3 immunology nurses (B7, B6, B5) and 2 allergy nurses (2 B6) supporting a busy service. Admin team comprises of 3 medical secretaries, 2 admin support and one patient administration manager. The service is supported by a service and group manager

There is collaborative working with many specialties including paediatric, anaesthetic and respiratory teams. Immunologists have a regular weekly paediatric allergy clinic which is co-located with paediatricians running a similar service benefitting from allergy MDT. West Midlands Anaesthetic Allergy Clinic (WMAAC) is a well-established and monthly clinic for adults with immunologist and anaesthetist working closely together providing this service. There is a Paediatric equivalent service in collaboration with paediatric and anaesthetic colleagues.

Allergy nursing team provide a variety of specialist treatments including sublingual and subcutaneous immunotherapy for aeroallergen and venom allergy as well as anti IgE monoclonal antibody as per NICE guidance.
