Job overview

This is a whole time 10 PA substantive post for a Specialty Doctor in Anaesthesia.  The post holder will be expected to cover theatre lists independently as per agreed job plan. Occasionally the specialty doctor may be called upon to partake in a 1:8 on call on the senior obstetric on call rota. Occasionally the specialty doctor may be called upon to partake in a 1:8 on call on the senior obstetric on call rota. The post will attract additional PAs (up to 2 additional PAs), this will be applicable when cover includes being part of a shift rota covering out of hours obstetrics or similar general duties on a 1:8 shift rota.

Each specialty doctor in the Trust has 1 PA allocated for SPA. SPA activity will be job planned accordingly and agreement reached on how and where such activity is undertaken. The overall job plan will be managed within the limits of the European Working Time Directive.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a whole time 10 PA (with an optional extra 2 PA)  post for a Specialty Doctor in Anaesthesia.

The post holder will be expected to cover theatre lists independently as per agreed job plan. Occasionally the specialty doctor may be called upon to partake in a 1:8 on call on the senior obstetric on call rota. The mutually agreed job plan will reflect the flexible nature of the role and can be expected to evolve and change over time.

In time and following satisfactory review by the Clinical Lead, the post holder may be invited to support the on call non-resident general consultant on call rota over-night. In such instances, the post holder will be supervised by a consultant anaesthetist locally or distant while on call on a case-by-case basis.

The timetabled duties of the job will evolve over time, to meet the needs of the department especially will include 7 day working delivery, accordingly the post holder is expected to accept flexibility to changed program activities following mutual discussion.

The department will consider support on an individual basis, for any suitably experienced appointee, who wishes to pursue the PMETB Article 14 route to specialist registration including educational supervision and career guidance.

Participation in formal educational sessions, clinical governance, quality improvement activity will be encouraged. The post holder will be encouraged to undertake training as clinical and educational supervisors, in order to participate formally in teaching trainees and medical students.

Applicants must be able to work independently and unsupervised. Applicants must have full registration with the GMC and a licence to practice. The appointment will be made under the terms of the 2021 SAS contract.
