This post moves to support the current service provision and offers the post holder a fabulous opportunity to be at the forefront of the development and drive to shape EGS at The Royal Cornwall Hospital in partnership with the current clinical leadership team.
Our current EGS team have access to a modern Same Day Emergency Care unit with a monitored trolley bay for rapid transfer from the Emergency Department of unwell surgical patients, alongside a 21 bedded Emergency Surgical Unit. Point of Care blood analysis machines and Ultrasound diagnostics on the ward to enable rapid decisions to be taken on these patients for enhanced flow.
Access to 4 days per week (aiming for 5) Emergency Surgical Ambulatory Clinics promote ambulation of patients providing follow up opportunities for those high risk of relapsing. Alongside this, we have two 26 bedded wards for longer term patients which are supported by our ward based Junior Surgical teams alongside a fully equipped Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit.
Work with the current specialty leads to develop pathways and
use of and development of ambulatory alternative provision models
to support patient flow.
Work with our Southwest Ambulance teams and community
providers such as the Community Diagnostic Hubs and Minor Injury
Units, alongside virtual ward implementation, to create advanced
ambulatory models of care for General Surgery.
Provide an Emergency General Surgery (EGS) service of the highest
standards for the Cornish population.
Provide and develop a specialty interest within the realms of
children’s general surgery, benign colorectal or upper GI surgery,
benign hepatobiliary or complex endoscopic practice.
Share responsibility with colleagues for the day to day management
portfolio in EGS.
Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students in EGS
including developing weekly evidence based governance and
service development training.
Ensure ongoing development via Continuing Medical Education
(CME).
Provide patient cover for off site/absent consultant colleagues.
Engage in some elements of flexible timetabling with cooperation and
transparency.
Support colleagues throughout the multidisciplinary team and
promote a culture of respect and kindness to all.
