Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join a large, dynamic and forward-thinking Acute Medicine service at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The Specialist Doctor in Acute Medicine will provide senior clinical input into the assessment, diagnosis and management of acutely unwell adult patients presenting via the Emergency Department and primary care. The post-holder will work across the Acute Medicine Unit (AMU) and the Urgent Medical Assessment Centre (UMAC/SDEC), supporting consultant-led ward rounds, acute admissions, Same Day Emergency Care activity, and ambulatory pathways.

The role is integral to the safe and effective delivery of front-door medicine within a high-volume service assessing approximately 500–600 emergency medical attendances per week. In addition to direct clinical care, the post-holder will supervise and support resident doctors and Advanced Nurse Practitioners, contribute to teaching and clinical governance, and play an active role in service development as the Acute Medicine footprint continues to expand. This post offers the opportunity to work within a stable, experienced consultant body in a teaching hospital environment, with structured support for professional development and CESR progression where appropriate.

Main duties of the job

The Specialist Doctor in Acute Medicine will provide senior clinical leadership in the assessment, diagnosis and management of adult patients presenting with acute medical conditions. The post-holder will work across the Acute Medicine Unit (AMU) and the Urgent Medical Assessment Centre (UMAC/SDEC), contributing to consultant-led ward rounds, acute admissions, post-take reviews, and Same Day Emergency Care activity. This includes timely senior decision-making to support patient flow, safe discharge, and appropriate escalation of care.

The role involves close collaboration with consultants, resident doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, nursing teams, and specialty colleagues to ensure high standards of clinical care. The post-holder will supervise and support junior medical staff, participate in structured handovers, and contribute to weekend and evening rota commitments as required.

In addition to direct clinical care, the Specialist Doctor will participate in teaching, clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities. There will be opportunities to support service development within Acute Medicine and to contribute to educational supervision, multidisciplinary training, and ongoing transformation of the Acute Medicine service.
