The Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne (situated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary site) has an exciting, progressive paediatric service with regional and supra regional specialties. We are delighted to offer a Paediatric Dietitian post within our Band 6 paediatric rotation. This is an opportunity to develop your specialist paediatric skills working alongside a team of lead dietitians who are experts in their respective specialist areas.

You will be joining a dynamic and established team of over 20 specialist Paediatric Dietitians working within the above areas, and others, such as Inherited Metabolic Disorders, Ketogenic Diet Therapy, Neonates, and Kidney Disease.

Main duties of the job

The paediatric dietetic team are primarily based at the RVI site, there is also a small paediatric dietetic team at the Freeman Hospital. Each post within the rotation covers 1-2 specialist areas and rotates approximately every 18 months. The services are delivered to inpatients, outpatients and, in some areas, community outreach clinics, patient homes and via telephone support. Specialties may include: Allergy, Bone Marrow Transplant, Cardiothoracic Surgery (based at the Freeman Hospital), Cystic Fibrosis, Gastroenterology, Oncology and Respiratory. It is envisaged that the rotation will expand to include more specialist areas. You will receive support and training from Lead Specialist Dietitians.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Delivers a comprehensive and effective clinical nutrition and dietetic service in acute hospital services in the specialist area/s or in the community
  • Provides specialist dietetic assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and management in the clinical setting and in one or more sub-specialty areas, this may include supplementary prescribing
  • Acts as a source of expertise in nutrition support/education and dietetics to patients, medical staff, health care professionals, relatives, carers and all relevant agencies
  • Provides expertise to nutrition teams and works in other multidisciplinary teams
  • Delivers education and training at all levels
  • Participates in team and multi-disciplinary evaluation, audit and research

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.
